Defective trim switch 97 merc, o/b

:confused:1997 135 hp mercury outboard Can raise engine with trim switch but can't lower with same switch on engine or switch on throttle control it was working intermittently than stoped. Please Help

There shuold be 2 relays Little black boxes by the electronics panel under cowling. Usually you can swap them and see if up down swap. If that works just replace the relay. I'm not familiar with that particular engine but both my v6 o/b mercs have had issues with the trim relays or switch at one time or another.

Thanks for reply..Replaced relay and that did'nt work, Im bringing it to mechanic.

Had issues with my '97 150 and I found a worn wire going up into the cowl last year. It worked fine for a while then did the same thing you mention. I took the switch out but still connected and the boot around it was loose so I shot some WD40 into it and worked the switch back and forth. After a couple times it started to work again. I wrapped the boot in black electrical tape and put it back in. Probably had a little corrosion in it.

Forgot to mention the 2 exterior wires running from trim motors to the iside of cowl. Check for wear and or splitting.
