Re: Define American
An American is a person not just born in the USA. Evidence of this is provided by the likes of John Kerry, Jane Fonda, etc.
I've had Canadian shipmates who were more American than many USA natives I've known. They enlisted in the United States Navy where many "Americans" blatantly avoided service in any military branch of our country.
I define American as one who loves the USA, has fought or died for it, supports it and is willing to take the flak for it.
We Americans are not always right, as is made abundently apparent by some of the politicians we elect.
But, we still support this great country of ours.
Being born on the continents of North or South America does not automatically grant the title of being American.
As far as what people in other countries consider American, only people from the USA are called American. They are quite specific about that, calling Canadians Canadian, Germans German, Brits British, etc. This I learned from extensive travel to and residency of other countries.
Even the immigration officials refer to U. S. people as American. Evidence of this can be found at the US/Canadian border when an official asks whether you are American or Canadian.
Just my not so humble opinion.
I am American and justly proud of it.
