Re: Define American

An American is a person not just born in the USA. Evidence of this is provided by the likes of John Kerry, Jane Fonda, etc.

I've had Canadian shipmates who were more American than many USA natives I've known. They enlisted in the United States Navy where many "Americans" blatantly avoided service in any military branch of our country.

I define American as one who loves the USA, has fought or died for it, supports it and is willing to take the flak for it.

We Americans are not always right, as is made abundently apparent by some of the politicians we elect.
But, we still support this great country of ours.

Being born on the continents of North or South America does not automatically grant the title of being American.

As far as what people in other countries consider American, only people from the USA are called American. They are quite specific about that, calling Canadians Canadian, Germans German, Brits British, etc. This I learned from extensive travel to and residency of other countries.

Even the immigration officials refer to U. S. people as American. Evidence of this can be found at the US/Canadian border when an official asks whether you are American or Canadian.

Just my not so humble opinion.
I am American and justly proud of it.

then why is it Venezuelans and Brazilians also consider themselves american? and why doesnt the US customs and immigration label the lines american citizens instead of US citizens and US residents?
I go through that line 4-5 times a year.

rodbolt,

You' re playing with semantics.

The term "American" is known worldwide as being from the USA. Sorry, if that offends.

Being from "America" means being from a land of the: FREE.

Our future, or demise, will be our own. At least we got to CHOOSE it.

That is the beauty of the AMERICAN (USA) dream.

Why are you still here?

Because they are too lazy to say South American, just like we are too lazy to say United States of American.

Yes, there are more places than the US in the Americas. No, nobody else refers to their NATIONALITY as American. Key word there, nationality. Not continentality, nationality.

I think it's pretty cut and dry. If you are referring to what continent you come from, you only have 7 choices. European, Asian, African, Australian, Antartican(though I doubt that gets said much), North American, South American. There are hundreds(thousands?) of nationalities, and American happens to fall in those, just like Australian. Both of those happen to coincide with the continent they are on.

And saying "US citizen" is less syllables than "American citizen," and fits on a sign easier.

America, I thought it had to do with Amerigo Vesputchi (sp?) the explorer. Interesting to hear the different points of view.

What exactly would American Rules Football be in any other country but the good ol' USA?
