Definition of lean / rich?

Would one of the experts explain these.

Rich = Rich in Fuel or Air.

Lean = Lean in Fuel or Air.

One time it seems someone is describing a lean situation and it appears to be 'too little fuel' and the next time it seems to be 'too little air'...So which is it?

Rich/lean refers to the amount of fuel in relation to air. Simply said, making it richer means giving it more fuel, making it leaner means giving it less fuel.

Most of the time, the adjustments deal with the fuel to air ratio. So to make the mixture richer, add more fuel.

Anything that adds too much air to the mix is generally referred to as running lean.

Too slow can also be a problem, F_R. 8)

That was my first guess, but wanted to make sure I would be describing the right situation if I had to.
