For the record, what diesel and what drive?

Not that it really matters... You are not going to find anything on the market to connect a Volvo specific anything to a Merc anything. If you were putting in a Volvo/GM gas engine, it's completely do-able. But a Volvo built diesel... Uhh Uhh.. ain't going to happen. Suppose if you had access to a machine shop to make the parts, but that's just getting silly...

Why is the volvo gm gas bell housing bolt pattern different from a Diesel pattern?

because one is GM, one is Volvo. there is no standard across the industries. as you get into industrial diesels, then yes, there is the SAE standard bolt paterns.

200 hp has to much torque for an alpha 1 I know their good for 300 hp gas but a 200hp diesel has to much torque? How much torque does a 300hp 454 have? more than a 200hp diesel

Assuming you are talking about a 6 cylindrer 41 series turbocharged diesel, the Alpha well not hold up.

I would also be interested to hear how you hook up the shift interrupt switch. A diesel does not have an ignition system.

I have no clue as to the original question... and hopefully this isn't hijacking the question as it does relate to it. But doesn't Mercruiser offer a diesel with their alphas? I seem to remember a post years ago with this question about the shift interrupt. If memory serves, the diesel idles rough enough that the switch isn't needed. Or maybe that's only true of a small four banger diesel?

I remember that thread, and it may be possible, but if the Volvo doesn't, then what?

If one desires to investigate what torque a Volvo diesel engine (or any other import diesel has) the torque figure will likely be shown as N-M (Newton-Meter). Multiply that number by .7375 to convert to lbs-ft. Volvo has a number of six cylinder marine diesels with 800+ N-M (thats just a tick under 600 lb/ft) of torque that a 454 GM gasser does not have. Even the 6.2 supercharged marine engine only develops 545 lb/ft of torque.

Mercruiser uses the Quantum 2.0 diesel behind the alpha, however its only 170hp. above the 2 liter, they use Bravo's and now Axius stern drives

Re the shift interrupt I would think it could be creatively wired to the stop solenoid and work just fine. Have not tried this. While on the topic do large outboasrds have shift interrupt and if not why not I wonder?
