Re: Delete this Junk!

Interesting.
Having had over 50 cars, 2 I/O boats, 3 Outboards, can't remember all the snowmobiles, motorcycles, lawn mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, I have never had a true spark plug failure. Not in the sense of one coming apart in any way.
AC, Autolite, Champion, NGK have all been trouble free in all applications.

I had a spark plug blow out of the cylinder block on my lawnmower....but i think that was my fault not the plugs

Be sure your not confusing "what everyone says is best" with "what was designed for the engine". The Mercs I look after get NGK, the Johnny/Rudes get Champions.

I had a carton of bad milk once. Never again will I drink milk, eat yoghurt or have a pizza!

Need to get some sense of balance in all this, surely. There'll be duff plugs just like there's bad milk, but it don't mean that all Autolite, Champion, NGK or other plugs are faulty. The guys have all been in the business of selling good plugs for years.

As Paul says, if we use what has been designed for the engine, most times they'll work fine.

As Paul said; Champions for JohnnyRudes doesn't mean Champions for everything.

Never had a plug fail in an outboard. Only once in forever had a Bosch plug fail in one of my MBs.

Re: Delete this Junk!

I just did a rough estimate on how many plugs I've changed in my lifetime on all my cars, boats, motorcycles, lawnmowers, etc...it's somewhere around 400-600 (10-15 x 40yrs)and most were champions. The only time any of them came apart was from me cracking them during installation or removal but none did it while running. The ones I've seen come apart while running were from using a too long plug and the piston hit it. Having plugs come apart twice to one person is like 100000000:1 odds. Something strange with this picture.

I'm with Paul too. If we're talking about production recreational 2 stroke carb'd outboards, I think everyone agrees that its best to use the brand plugs it was designed for. Putting NGK's (which are good plugs) in an Evin/John is opening the door for something to happen. Just like putting Champions in a motor like Merc or Yamaha thats set up for NGK's.

We have run NGK's in OMC motors and Ive stated that may times. But they were rejetted for the hotter burn of the NGK's. We ran them in race motors but we dumped a ton of fuel. Like 4 2 bbls on a V4 and 6 2 bbls on a V6. To be honest, the Champions couldnt handle it.

We gotta keep things in context.

I once flipped a go kart and the Champion spark plug broke in half when it hit the asphalt. Man there is no excuse for that kind of product failure.

Why not simply use the plug that your engine's manufacturer recommends?

or do you know better than they do?

Re: Delete this Junk!

A simple "yes or No" would suffice.
No insult intended..the Torque specs for Champion plugs in outboards are all the same. This would be the issue I speak of when I say most people do not know how to torque a Champion plug.
Again, no insult, but your answer proves the point I'm making.
In fact, if you installed The correct plugs in an outboard to the specs of the plug for "that" application, and have a healthy outboard, run correctly and if something happened to "those" plugs, I'd buy ya a new set of your choice.
I wonder if there is a reason that Champion is 1 of only 2 manufacturers that have certified plugs for aircraft use. 99% of ALL piston engine aircraft fly with champion plugs.
Your opinion is welcome as always, but don't try to convince everyone Champion is junk...there is too much factual evidence to prove other-wise.
