Hi I have a pair of NGK B6S plugs in a 1967 6hp Johnson. I've just noticed that the portion of the ceramic which isn't covered by the plug caps is covered in a fine soot. What causes this? Is this a problem and do I need to change something?

Re: deposits on spark plug ceramic

It's the ghost of OMC punishing you for using the wrong brand plug. :)

Use only Champions in OMC products. In this case use Champion J4C gapped at .030" for all round use, .040" for mostly trolling and low speeds.

My guess is that you have exhaust gasses, including unburned fuel, in the bonnet making deposits on the insulators. If it gets extreme it can strangle your engine.
