Depth Sounder design?

As I spoke with the owner of my boat before buying, he told me I had to fix the depth sounder. I noticed my transducer is sealed to the bottom of the bilge, but it does not go out the bottom of the boat. I thought they all had to. There is no protruding component out the bottom of the hull.

Are some of the small ones simply designed like this? Are the relatively easy to remove and replace if necessary?

He has it epoxied to the bottom of the hull so that it shoots through it. That is often an optional mounting config depending on the transducer. You generally lose some sensitivity mounting it that way.

Usually, you can't fix a depth sounder and a new depth sounder will come with a new transducer.

Ok, to keep my life simple, I bought a Haweye depth finder that comes with a transom mounted transducer. I can just remove the one in the bilge, or leave it there... doesn't matter. Then, I can pull the transducer that is on the transom he left behind from his fish finder, and use that spot for the new one.

Just make sure you fill the holes left from removing the old one on the transom with epoxy or some type of good sealer so water doesn't enter your transom.
