I was taught that taking something that was not mine was stealing. Others may have a more flexible definition.

If it's yours, sure you can keep it, well, unless your neighbors complain ................

Bad luck???? If the part isn't any good and you thought it was and put that part on a good boat and it didn't work, I guess you could call that bad luck.

Is this some kind of trick question? Why don't you just tell us straight up what you have and want to do?

I was going up river, one fine day, and saw just the bow point of a canoe sticking out of the water. I tied a rope to it and dragged her up to the next sand bar. She was once a nice Grumman, but now, ripped open all the way down the hull bottom, I would best describe it as "derelict". She had a nice cast aluminum bow point still in good shape, but I left her to the river. I could've used that bow point, and that is why I started this thread!

I'm glad you defined derelict. Since we are both in N. Metro GA, I didn't want you to be calling my boat derelict because you would be encountering bad luck. LOL Call the DNR and explain what you found and you will get the straight scoop. It would be considered abandoned on a public waterway and there are rules/laws covering that in GA.

if in doubt contact the police... tell them what you found and ask.... may turn out to be stolen and someone is looking for it or may help with a missing person's investigation BUT most likely it can be legally yours after jumping through a few hoops.

I "found" part of a torn life jacket with a name written on it and turned it over to a park ranger.... He recognized the name and said that it belonged to a guy killed in a crash during a hydroplane race the prior weekend 60 miles up river. (Madison regatta)


I can tell you it's a sickening feeling to stop and trim up the engines because one loses power and see a life jacket wrapped around the prop!...

back to the OP--if it's just a canoe, sunk and busted up, not registered, I'd just take it home and not worry about it. But you will have trouble registering it if you want to put a motor on it.

If you go through the proper "found boat salvage" procedure, you will quickly find that it is hardly worth it, even for a bigger better boat--if your state's procedures are anything like ours. Anyone considering it would be advised to research the process first. And if it's a boat with any fuel on it, don't come near it.

this Crownline has been beached / abandoned for over a month. The hull looks ok-but has foot of water in in- Mercruiser Alpha & SS prop hanging out the back- seats are junk. My scavanger buddy is trying to track down owner by the registration #s and see whats the story--
