When I was out testing my boat, it made a very loud sound. After researching the problem, Don S said he believed the problem was my intermediate bearings. I removed the upper unit and he sure was right. I have a guy who has my EXACT boat, outdrive, motor, everything. He can send me anything I need cheap. He can send me the entire flywheel cover assembly and whatever else I may need, but I'm not sure what is all damaged yet, any suggestions from the pictures?

The upper unit works fine, the u-joint looks good, and the shaft that went into the flywheel looks great. The motor STILL drove the prop in the water when I was tyring to test the boat and it was making the loud sound, and when I ran it on earmuffs the prop still ran with the motor.

This picture is a picture inside the bellows going into the back of the boat towards the flywheel.

This is how I plan on fixing it below.

Don S said:
1 Remove the upper gear box on the outdrive
2. Remove 6 bolts (item #41 in link below)
3. Remove lag bolts holding engine front mounts to stringers.
4. Disconnect throttle cable, battery cables, hoses (Fuel and water).
5. Disconnect electrical main harness
6. Lift engine and move forward to clear flywheel housing out of transom shield and lift up.

I have a shop manual, I just am trying to figure out how much stuff I need to fix this.

Wow, those bearings came completely apart.

I would get the entire flywheel cover. Chances are the flywheel cover is scored/damaged by the bearings coming apart like that.

How did you get the driveshaft out?

It's impossible to say what all you will need from that picture alone, you need to pull the engine, inspect the flywheel cover, you probably have a 2 piece housing, and will only need the aft section from the looks of tht picture. Along with the shaft, and probably the flex plate on the flywheel.
You may have also damaged the yoke, and ujoints on the upper gear box.

PS: I've seen worse if it makes you feel any better.

It does make me feel better.

So when I first tried to pull the upper unit, it was stuck inside the drive shaft, and I didn't understand why. The upper unit would not pull out. I tried it again 6 months later (after winter), and it came right out without a problem.

By shaft you mean the one that comes from the u-joint connected to my upper unit? All that looks great to me and has no play. The shaft looked great, but lucky me I have 2 upper units for my boat. (minus a gear). I can upload pictures of that too if that would help. Thanks a lot

I'll tell him everything between the actual flywheel and the upper unit I need.

Yes, including the flexplate (vibration damper) that bolts to the flywheel as Don mentioned.

I was referring to the shaft in the flywheel cover.

(minus a gear)
You do realize, you can not replace just one gear in a Volvo drive. The are matched sets. If you try, it will fail.

Yah, it was the whole set I replaced, I have a set missing a gear, so the rest of the gears are worthless without their matched gear.

That pretty much says it all.

Okay I pulled the engine, and removed the bell housing.... bought a new one.. and was about to attach it and realized..... it's the wrong one. It was the same as mine but about 2 inches too long (so to speak) and it had more splines. Mine is 10 splines and I can't find the part anywhere....

Re: Destruction around my flywheel

some of the later fine spline shafts will work but you have to change the ujoint yoke. occasionally I have to move the engine fwd slightly due to the length of some of the later style bell housings.
mostly its just a matter of redrilling the mount holes and occasionally lenghtening the ex hoses.
last I checked the 10 spline shaft wasnt avalible but that is always subject to change with volvo.
like DonS said, it could be worse.
ya outta see what a 425HP 8.1L jackshafted to a DP-E drive looks like when a ujoint explodes from excessive maint.
