Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Last piece was too small to cut on the wood support, so I flipped it up onto the driveway (was still plenty heavy, since it was the back of the boat - you'll see why later).

IMG_2566s.jpg

Flipped it back up to make the last cuts. You can see on the far side that again, the fiberglass just pulls right up from the decking. This whole area from pretty much the bench seat back was so wet and rotted, it was amazing it was still together.

IMG_2572s.jpg

Notice how thick the fiberglass is here in the back of the boat / bilge area. It was a REAL pain to saw through.

IMG_2573s.jpg

Notice the thickness of the bilge area compared to under the foam.

IMG_2579s.jpg

And just because it surprised me how thick it was...

Hey Curt, rather than chucking the '89 out, you should have sent the bits to oops! and he'd have built a 30 foot version for you! :D

Yeah, but then I would have been in the same place without a trailer for it! :D

You'd see me with a junk 30' boat in my driveway, chopping it up. [laugh]

Here are some pictures I took of the exhaust manifolds and risers that came with the boat. So besides the crack that was obvious before, you can see both manifolds were "repaired" at some point. I realize they already stuck money into having the heads redone, but it sure seems to me like it would be that much more reason to do things right, and replace the manifolds.

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Well, here is where I put up a BIG RED flag - the motor mounts. I mean, these things sit in the bilge area, and have the best chance of getting wet, and yet what I found was unprotected stringer behind the motor mount area. Granted, that's pretty high up, but water does splash around if enough gets in back there. Next time I'm in my boat, I'm getting a mirror back in there to see if mine are as poorly put together.

These two pictures are the BACK of the left and right motor mount, where the stringer would be. Notice no glass between the mount and the stringer, and notice the gaping hole where they just didn't glass at all.

IMG_2574s.jpg

IMG_2575s.jpg

Looking at it from the front. It's obvious the mount was put there before they glassed the area, and then they didn't spray up into the top area on the inside of the mount. That's besides the fact that it's so rotted it is falling apart.

IMG_2576s.jpg

Other side, not as rotted, but just as poorly glassed.

IMG_2578s.jpg

Here I am just pulling it apart without much effort. By the way, it's standing up, so the top of the motor mount is to the right.

IMG_2580s.jpg

Shell still standing, but not much left.

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

one of the down falls of the searays was the motor mounts. mine were just pieces of plywood stacked on top of each other. not good.....wet mush came out.

love these pics..... the cross sections are great.

i was going to comment on the thickness of searays hulls.....that is just fantastic.

it also goes to show, exactaly how much two part pour in foam adds to the rigidity of the hull. the two part foam, adds so much anti crush stregnth to the hull, that they can get away with only a 1/4 inch of glass (thats one layer of 1708 and two 1.5 csm) and its still as strong as the rest of the hull.

i think this is another completed projects forum candidate . just tons of info here.

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Thanks for the kudos. Glad I had something to give back to the Forum.

Ok, last few pictures to wrap it up.

Last section left on the ground (Pictured above) got cut up into smaller pieces. Again, the thickness of the outer fiberglass at the back of the boat (and the very front bow section too for that matter) made cutting more difficult, but not impossible.

For anyone who ends up doing a project like this, the best sawzall blade by far was "The Ax" by Milwaukee. I used various other blades at the beginning of the project which did the job, but nothing like the cutting speed and ease of "The Ax."

I realized I never really showed a good view of the rear mount I built, so here it is. I didn't bother cross bracing the side supports to the frame of it like Friscoboater did, mainly because I had them sitting on the ground rather than on top of the end of the 4x4 frame. They were really only there to keep the boat from rocking back and forth while I was climbing around in it. They were built in place so I could get the height correct. As such, the boat only had about 1/4" of play rocking back and forth. :D

I moved my trailer up and started loading parts I'm taking to storage. I'll take pictures of all the parts I'm selling so I can put them up on Ebay or whatever. Many parts were put in those plastic bins you saw in several pictures. I also have several ziploc bags of stainless screws & hardware - I'll never need to buy any again. And of course, you can see the big LAST pile of fiberglass & foam.

Well folks... That's about it. The boat will be officially gone on Friday when the garbage guys come, although I'll have parts & accessories for years to come I'm sure.

For informational sake, the first picture shown of it being taken off the trailer was taken on 8/11/11 and the project ended yesterday, 9/19/11, so it only sat in my driveway for a little over a month. Much of that time, it was untouched. I pulled the Alpha One off the weekend of 8/24/11, and didn't start pulling the engine until 8/27/11. I worked after work for a few hours when I could, but most of the time spent was on the weekend (when we weren't out on the lake in the new boat). Labor Day Weekend was when I started pulling the interior (9/2) and pulling the cap.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's possible I have 40-50 hours into the strip down & cut up project. Then again, I spent time to COMPLETELY strip it, right down to and including pretty much every stainless screw. All fastners, if they were specific to something, were bagged and tagged in ziploc bags. I also took a lot of care not to just snip wires and cut things out, since I plan on selling, or possibly reusing as much of the boat as I can.

I hope you all enjoyed and can get something useful out of my "destruction" thread. At some point, I'll be starting a rebuild thread for my boat, as I know I have at least some stringer and floor work to be done.

Happy boating everyone!

Struc, congratulations on creating such an informative thread. It gave me an insight into glassers I've not seen before. Great job mate, and thanks. :)

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Thanks everyone. I appreciate it. And due to all the applause, I'm coming back for an encore. :D

Was cleaning up more and loading more stuff in the trailer after work today. Came across the exhaust manifolds, and decided to see what they covered up with the JB Weld. So, I took a hammer to the JB Weld and then scraped away what I could with a screwdriver. Well, it wasn't just a crack, it was a CRACK! Like the two sides of the crack aren't even the same height anymore!

How anyone would try and fix and re-use those things - it's just -

Also was kinda intrigued by what oops! said about the hull being 1/4", so I did some more measuring around the pieces I have left in the pile.

Sure enough, in most areas of the hull, it's 1/4"

IMG_2623s.jpg

The back of the hull, and the built in swim platforms were considerably thicker of course, along with the extra transom board on each side, which were both surprisingly in good condition.

And this is at the back of the boat, curving up into the side of the boat on the right.

I'm getting ready to get rid of a 16' runabout for the trailer also. I think I will take the lazyman's way and haul it to the landfill, for $5 a hundred pounds.

I want to say thanks too though, for showing us a lot of things I don't think most of us knew about boat building and unbuilding.

{Laugh} Well, it was fun making this thread for sure. The project started fun, but got a bit tedious at the end. Probably would not have been half as bad if I had a corded sawzall or at least 2 extra batteries for mine. Waiting for batteries to cool down and recharge was a pain.
