Detonation vs backfiring?

Hello,

A friend gave me his 1979 20 hp Envirude which had an oversized spark plug hole and stripped treads. Originally the engine would start without problems and then would die as a result of water stopping circulating and overheating.

I just changed the cylinder head, thermostat and gaskets. Put new champion plugs (L77J4C)gapped @ .040. Added fresh gas with 50:1 oil ratio and tried to start the thing. Well, after few pulls this huge bang came out of the exhaust, almost sending me to the floor. I tried cranking few more times but more gun shot sound alike came out of the exhaust. The engine sounded like it would almost start but nothing at the end.

Is this what you call detonation? What is the difference between detonation and backfiring?

I noticed that at TDC the flywheel was indicating about 24 degrees instead of 34 degrees. Could my starting problem be caused by the timming being 10 degrees off? If so, why was the engine starting before I changed the head, gaskets, thermostat and plugs and now it won't start?

Thanks again for your help.

Veronica

take off the flywheel and make sure the key in the keyway is not damaged if it is that would cause the back firing and prevent it from starting, good luck.

If the wires are reversed now it would act axactly like you describe. Check to make sure they are not reversed.

Good luck!

The flywheel key looks a bit rounded. Should it be somehow square?

Veronica

Please be aware that although the sparkplug leads looks to be in right place, it can be wrong if you swapped upper coil with lower when you put them back on. I tried that myselves.

Hi G Dane,

I am certain they were not crossed. I removed the power packs which has the ignition coils attached to them prior to changing the head. The top cylinder power pack has an orange wire and the connector terminals.

Re: Detonation vs backfiring?

Hi Veronica....

Couple things here....in 1979 there was a 25hp but no 20hp. Could you please post the model number and we can get that straight for you.

Look at the power pack leads to the ignition coils. One should have a blue stripe and the other a green stripe. Maybe only one will have a stripe. Just remember, the blue stripe goes to the upper coil and the green to the lower coil.

Don't try a restart until you are certain all wiring in the ignition system is correct. Backfires blow head gaskets.

Re: Detonation vs backfiring?

Hi OutboardJim,

The Model is 209CR02R
Serial is C7041271

The year is definitely a 1979 Canadian production.
The year is also stamped on the engine.

I know it looks like a 1984 based on the model but I got an Envirude link to year and model and 209CR02 is 1979. Most seloc book will not list for a 1979 20HP. It has 20 hp for 1973, (1981-82), and 1985-on.

Most parts for this engine between 1974-1984 are the same.

I will try to find that link again and send it to you.

Thanks

Veronica,
Switch the plug wires. You won't hurt anything if it's not the case that they're switched. The violent backfiring you're experiencing is almost always the result of switched wires. It ain't gonna hurt to try...
- Scott

Wish I'd thought of that..........

Seriously, I'm sure that'll do it. Good luck!
