07 DF 140 bought new zero time.

Right off the bat it would over rev with the 21 prop the dealer sent after talking on the boat and previuos motor.

Would take darn near 4 grand to 4500 to get up on step.

Went to a 23 prop and sucker would only get 57-5800 wide open with a light load.

Boat is a Pacific Skiff 22ft DS model.

Use gas like mad our old 1988 85hp uses less even the old ox66 yamaha 150 would burn less.

Would carbon like mad on the bottom plug.

Every time i checked compression the bottom would read out of spec with 4 different compression checkers.

Gas is always clean and running racor with another before it.
No ethanol up here.

Makes oil.
Have installed a hotter thermostat but still makes oil.

Just got it back from the dealer saying nothing is wrong.

Any ideas?

Have the valves been checked? Did you do leak down on bottom cylinder. What are the compression numbers? Low pressure pump checked? Bottom cylinder may have tight valve. Engine will have to be running correctly, before you can prop it. 07 model has been setting for 3 years, everything on it should be checked. Drain the injector rail, VST, and high pressure filter. Trash in fuel, will need complete fuel system service.

Using lots of fuel, making oil== low pressure fuel pump
Making oil=== rings not seating,----- proper running engine, correct thermostat, correct prop, and hope this corrects it.

No high tech oil, only min spec oil listed in owners manual, for breakin. Just my opinon.

Re: Df140 gremlins

Everything you have listed was checked by dealer and everything was fine.

I have cleaned the vst and fuel tank is a clear 15gal container plus it is filtered before it goes in the tank.

Broke it in with dino oil and by the book.

Motor has not been sitting and has been run every chance to try figure out what is up with it.

Forgot to add that i did put a new low pressure pump on it and it did help a little with the gas in the oil.

Motor is not idling long and is run in upper rpm to burn off the gas in the oil.
But the thing sucks so much gas hard to run it in upper rpm.

Did put a lift on to try and find a sweet spot.

Re: Df140 gremlins

You mention that it burns lots of fuel. That is a rather meaningless term unless you attach some numbers to it. A 140 engine will burn nearly 14 gallons of fuel/hour at wide open throttle. Now that number is a rule of thumb for outboards so a gallon or two either way is certainly possible depending on load, boat, prop, etc. Horsepower takes fuel -- there simply isn't any way around it.

Yes i know hp takes fuel.
Had a yamaha fi ox66 150 on the boat before this zuk and it burned 15gal hr at full throttle with huge load. Over 5,000lbs and got it on step.

This 140 is using way more than the old motor.
Trip to fishcamp is taking darn near 15 gal running around 5 grand.
Have tried playing around with rpm's but anything higher is just sucking gas.
Where the 150 only used 8-9 at the most.
Camp is about an hr away.

Also am comparing this motor to other zuk 140's pushing heavier boats and they are using quite a bit less fuel while running higher rpm's.
There are quite a few out here to compare too.

This motor has multiple mechanic's confused on what is going on same with other 140 owners.

If you can doc the fuel use. Have dealer reset computer with the oxygen sensor and laptop.
What is the fuel pressure readings on the high side? If pressure is too high pushes more fuel in engine.

Will have to see about fuel pressure tester.

It is Darn near $1,000.00 to send the motor to the dealer.
They do not want to visit my area anyways.

Hoping the independent rude dealer will pick up zuks as there are a bunch out here.

Thanks for the tips.

Re: Df140 gremlins

I use automotive injector fuel pressure guage for high side, T between high pressure filter and injector rail. I use brass T , automotive injector hose, metal clamps. For the low side I use old style automotive fuel pressure combo vacuum guage , this will check low pressure pump, and if connected on fuel tank side of low pressure will test for fuel restriction. Vacuum not over 4. Insert clear hose on pressure side of low pressure pump, bubbles=air. I have hoses long enough to place guage in cockpit of 25 ft boat, and test at all rpms if needed. The regulator in the VST should hold 28 lbs psi for 5 minutes engine off. I`m flying to Kenia Alaska 19 Aug, you close.

Thanks for tips on the gauge set ups.

Oh about another 500 miles southwest and $400 airplane ticket.
