Ok so a friend of mine bought a boat with a suzuki DF70 outboard motor. Apparently mistake #1 of his would be not taking the boat for a test run, But we launch the boat it cranks perfectly. We pull away from the boat launch throttle up and begin our short trip. As he throttled the boat up it starts to pick up speed, but suddenly motor begins to sputter and sounds of misfiring. I looked the motor over everything seems to be in order. Crank it again and idles perfect give it alittle throttle and seems to run fine but give it more throttle and cuts out. Any ideas that we can check. he said the people he bought it from said that a tuneup was just done on the boat. its fuel injected and over all Im not up to date on outboard motors. Also when we pulled the boat out of the water there is a hose that is barely coming out the lower unit as if another hose connects to it to go to the motor. anyone know what this hose is for?? please any input will help!

Re: DF70 cuts out

The hose out of the lower unit is probibly the pickup hose for hooking up a speedo. As for the misfire is it at a certain RPM? If its 3000rpm it probibly the "safe mode" kicking in which limits the RPM to 3000 if there is a malfunction code. If not change the plugs as I've noticed mine being sensitive to bad plugs or plug gap. Another thing to look at is the Mikuni low pressure vacuum fuel pump, the membranes are know to go bad and not feed the high pressure pump but that can usually be tested my squeezing the primer bulb a few times to see if it clears up. Also a ripped membrane will allow fuel into the crank case and the oil will have a "gassy" smell.

Re: DF70 cuts out

I have the same engine. Check the internal fuel filter. Mine got clogged and the engine would not rev above 1k rpms.
had the filter replaced and all was fine.
