Dhadley, The shop by my house is going to run my motor on the Dyno tomorrow to verify WOT RPM and obviously verify my tach..

Is there anything else you can suggest that I can have them verify while its hooked to the dyno???

That should tell us what we need to know. Ask them -- before they start -- what the pressure should be for your motor. That way they have to be on the money.

What should the pressure be, what is a good ball park figure???? Is that a dyno specific pressure reading or is it a Johnson spec???

Thats a spec from the manufacturer of the dyno. They have a chart for each model motor from each engine manufacturer.

dd,

When Dhadley said your setup looks odd because the because many of your adjustments are not in the middle but they are at the extremes.

Well this my friend we have in common. My idle screw is all the way in and my cam follower is nearly all the way out.

We have the same problem and the setup seems to be the same. Could this be the issue?

It kinda reminds me of a rubix cube where you can get a lot of squares lined up it looks good from one angle(in the case of a motor by measuring certain things) but it is still off on another side. Does that make sense to anyone?

I intend to post an upclose picture of my linkage setup so DHadley can see a better angle of what I have. It does sound as if we are chasing the same tail (sort of speak) but I dont know the overall effect since my (underload) idel timing is correct @ 4*, my WOT timing is at 28* and my butterflies are horizontal at WOT. it seems as if all if working right...

I will post an upclose pic of my linkage tomorrow and I will ask the guy who is going to dyno my motor what he thinks as well..

Is it possible for the motor to be timed right for the #1 cylinder but be off for the others?

I think that would only apply if the flywheel key was worn... There is a way to check that, I just dont remember how.. I did verify mine and all was good.. I think that just verifies that each cylinder is firing once and not twice per flywheel rotation.

DHadley can answer that question a whole lot better than I can...

Re: DHadley, could you look at the pics of my motor height??

Everything just looks off. The idle stop shouldnt be that far in and its trying to pick up the carbs way too soon. It just doesnt look right.

Its hard to tell but it even looks like the throttle stop screw is out further than normal. Thats that little screw with a nut on it aft of the throttle linkage.

The idle screw is definately screwed in far. I am just curious, what rpm does it idle out of the water?

Re: DHadley, could you look at the pics of my motor height??

It idles at 950-1000 or so on the trailer and 600-650 or so in gear in the water...

So DHadley, should I be considering a synk & link?

Also I have a question: If I were to disconnect all linkage, etc, and turn my idle stop screw OUT that would cause the timer base to retard. Currently I have 4* at idle in the water. So doesnt that mean that part of the linkage setup is correct?????

As far as the carb pick up (nylon roller) it isnt touching the cam, it real close but not touching.

As stated in an earlier post idle timing, WOT, etc are all OK per the requirements and I am getting full throttle....

We dont worry about what the actual idle timing is, that will change with how deep the motor sits in the water, general condition of the motor, etc. we just set the idle so it runs good. Your idle rpms seem to be OK, actually a bit low (which is OK) but with the stop screw in that far I'd think it'd be much higher.

Interesting, well I will post the dyno results tomorrow and go from there.

I dont know how confortable I feel about this particular shop doing my synk and link. I would much rather take it to Johnson Marine who specializes in this motor.

Re: DHadley, could you look at the pics of my motor height??

Well I am back to square 1.... As I figured, when I called the shop by my house they told me they could run my motor on the dyno, so when I called to confirm my appointment, they said "no" we are going to just hook up a remote tach and verify your RPM on the trailer.....

For what they were going to charge me I will go buy another tach and do it myself.....

DHadley, I took your advice and asked them for the "pressure" range my motor should run at based on thier dyno, I also asked if they could verify WOT timing, and verify my tach reading.. Once I began asking questions they were back pedeling big time...

OH well, time to buy an OMC tach.....and do it myself..

I dont want to butt in and cause a loss of concentration, but Ive been following this post for several days, now im getting curious.Referring to ddbyrdsstatment:::I think that would only apply if the flywheel key was worn... There is a way to check that, I just dont remember how.. I did verify mine and all was good.. I think that just verifies that each cylinder is firing once and not twice per flywheel rotation.:::I had problems with my 89 150 on an earlier post,i removed all plugs, turned it with starter with spark advance tied to full.#1 was 28btdc and #2 was44btdc.When I took it to the lake, it was ok.Another thing Im pretty sure it fired twice per rev.
Sorry for butting in.

Hey James you are not butting in... I wasnt to sure on my memory, thats why I ended that statement with DHadley could answer it alot better than me....

Didnt intend any confusion...

ddbyrd3, for the time and money you spent on this, you could have hauled the boat from Calif. to Florida now and let Dhadley fix it. :D
Just kidding, I think you looked at the fly wheel key didnt you? I remember suggesting it to somebody, but maybe it wasnt you.

Re: DHadley, could you look at the pics of my motor height??

And on the way to Florida I could stop by Cenrtal Texas....

I was me, and yes I did verify all is good....

The bad thing about replacing parts is it cost $$, the good thing about replacing part is you know all is good going forward..

But it is still bitter sweet, I would rather have that $$$ earning interest.....

It's tach time for me...
