Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Jason 1955

If you havnt done already, you could consider removing the divider in intake. There has been some advise of this, try to search for plenum in old posts. There has been mentioned a necessary carb mod with this, but never exactly which. Should give you the possibility of 800 rpms extra !! Dhadley knows.

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Dhadley,
I raised the motor up 1 more inch last night! Hopefully that will help out even more with my quest for more RPM's. I did want to ask you about the carbs again though. You mentioned try running the 115 carbs. If I run these carbs what jets do you recomend running? Do I need to jet for a 115 or the 135? Also my dad told me last night that we did install the stuffers in the exhaust when we built this motor because the block is actually a 135 block and it was already milled for it. Is it worth it to remove them?
BTW: Someone mentioned to me in a post above about milling out the center of the intake plentum for increased air flow, can you explain that to me in further detail like where to mill and how much to mill out?

Thanks guys for all you input!!!
Jason

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

I take it from your posts that you are at 5300 now?

I would try it as is and see what the increased height does. Make only one change at a time!!

Run the 115 carbs with stock jetting. Carbs are calibrated (not just jetted) for air flow not horsepower. Thats the only thing a carb knows -- air flow. It cant read horsepower. A 115 carb doesnt know if its on a 115 or a 50 or a 200 hp motor.

Leave the inserts in the exhaust for now. At this rpm they arent hurting that much.

Good luck!

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Dhadley,
I'm around 5200 rpm's right now. My motor was only turning about 4900 before the changes. Every now and then it would hit 5000rpm's but most of the time it was 4900. This past weekend it was turning 5200 easly with no effort or playing with trim and so forth.

I see what you are saying about the carbs, that makes since now that I read your post. I will defintly try the new motor height first before I change the carbs.
Thanks again for all your help and advice!!!
Jason

P.S. I will keep you posted on the results after this weekend.

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Jason, I've got the same motor you have. Did the same thing to it(well sort of). I chickened out on the 150 psi and went with a lower compression head gasket.(gives less power(not much), but I'm experimenting) I didn't want to detonate. I think 150 is right at the area of "better have good gas" or your gonna have problems with high timing and low grade fuel. The thicker gaskets only reduced the psi 10.

Have you done any runs at WOT, killed engine, then checked plugs?

Sparkroost,
I haven't tried the running WOT and killing the engine deal yet. I was going to try it this weekend.
Thanks:
Jason

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Dhadley,
I have some more results for you.
This weekend I got a chance to run the boat since I raised the motor again. It picked up about 100 more rpm's and about 2mph. I think I am about as high as I can go now because the motor is on the verge of cavitating now. When I started out it would only run about 44mph but with the motor height change I was able to get 48.5 mph (gps) this weekend. I think if I'm going to see anymore, I'm going to have to check into some props. Do you have any performance upgrades I can do to increase alittle more HP so I can reach my quest for 50mph?
Thanks again for all the help:
Jason

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

HP improvements will come after you maxed out what you have.

Lets look at what youve done - you picked up over 4 mph and spent nothing but time. Dont spend money right now on motor parts. We still have room to get the rpms up which should continue to show performance gains. Your goal of 50 is looking fairly reasonable.

Hows the water pressure?

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Dhadley,
My water pressure is still good. I don't have a pressure gauge but I do have a "Pee Stream" pouring out the side of the motor where I can look back a keep a good eye on it. I was turning about 5300 rpm's sunday. I'm not sure if I can go any higher with the motor. It planes out real good but when the front falls down once on plane it will try and cavitate. I feel like if I go any higher with it that will make it lose all bite. Anymore suggestions I can do for setup? Will it help to add some weight to the back of the boat to help get the bow up more?

Thanks:
Jason

Next step -- a water pressure gauge.

Where is the most accurate place to pick up the pressure off the motor?

Thanks:
Jason

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Dhadley,
Am I to the limit of Rpm's for this motor being that I'm turning it 5300 now or can I safely turn it some more?

Also:
Am I still ok with running 87 octane gas in it being that I have 150psi of compression and running the 28 degrees timing?
Thanks again:
Jason

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

The water pressure gauge will have instructions for where to hook it in.

5300 is certianly better than what you had but you could use some more. Your boat is responding well to small increases in X dimention. Yes, you can probably run the motor higher but you may need a better prop to do so. If you are mounted all the way up now you may consider a jackplate. A manual one is fine unless you want a hydraulic. I just bought one for my Dusky. Gonna try to get it mounted tonight.

I would stick with 87 octane but I would use a cool plug like the L77JC4 Champion. Omce we get a touch more rpm we may go one or two sizes richer on the high speed jets or back off the timing a degree or two.

Testing will tell!

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

Ok.....Sounds good to me. I'll see what I can do as far trying another prop. I'll keep you posted on that. In the mean time I'll try and get a water psi gauge on there and change the plugs to the L77JC4 because I'm still running the UL77V in it right now.

BTW: Is there anyway I can have my prop reworked to where it has more cup to it and help it bite better or am I better off to try and find another prop? I just don't have the funds to put into a high dollar prop right now.

Thanks again:
Jason

Jason:

I live near Ayden, NC, grew up in Greenville and Winterville, and I'm just curious......where are you doing all this testing?

BTW, great job getting some input and getting that boat to move!!

Re: Dhadley........Talk to me!!!!!!

By all means have the existing prop redone. Just make sure its done by a shop who has the correct pitch blocks for an SST. Have it brought back to origanil specs, dont increase the ammount of cup. That will give you more bite but hurt the rpms right now.

You might consider this -- dont increase the cup angle but extend it further. IE -- where the cup stops (origanilly just past the center of the tip) bring it on around another 1/2". That gives it some more lift.

Boatproject,
Hey man,
It's good to see there are some locals on here. I only live about 5 miles from Ayden right now! I mostly do all my testing on the Tar River. I normally put in in Grimsland and run towards Washington.

Dhadley,
Thanks for all the advice you have given me on this project!! I really appreciate it!! I will keep you posted on the results once I have the prop reworked or try another prop.

Thanks again everybody:
Jason
