Diagnosing Stator

Okay, everyone has been very helpful on this board, so i'm going to try again. I previously posted a problem with my '72 650 would not idle and cuts out and dies after running a short time...then will not restart. Some suggested a stator problem (I've done everything else!).<br /><br />Question is, How the heck do I check the stator...and I'm kinda...slow...so please make it a SIMPLE as possible (smile). Not very experienced and I'm definitely learning as I go. Thanks!

Myelo, If that motor has a distributor, then it has battery-driven ignition, and the stator simply charges the battery, and plays no part in ignition. If it has Distributorless Alternator Driven Ignition (ADI), then your stator (alternator) plays a major role in your ignition. Do you have a manual? It should have some sort of test for the stator.

Without the motor running you should be able to test the stator for resistance with an ohmmeter. Just connect between the two wires coming from the stator. Don't know about yours, but mine has a blue and a red stator wire going to the switchbox. Resistance varies depending on HP. The motor has to be running to test AC output. <br /><br />Seems to me that the motor will run for a while off the battery even if no output from the stator. IE: it will run with a blown rectifier until the battery drains. If the stators shorted, I don't know????<br />Jerry
