Re: Diagnostic software

You do not need to see the timing 'jumping' you need to see when it is 'locked'.

I'm still missing something. How can the timing light see anything without a chalk mark? Do you need the timing light at all? Try to follow me and tell me what I am missing.

I hook up the software and set up the timing lite. I then start the engine and go into timing verification.
Lets say it reads out the timing should be 20 degrees BTDC. Now with the engine still running
I go to the timing light and read out what the actual timing is. This is where I am stumped. How do I read out the timing without marking the flywheel?

Re: Diagnostic software

The timing light does not 'see' anything, chalk mark or no mark - YOU see!!
It all works like a series of still-photos.
Each time cyl @3 fires, the timing light blink for a milli second, and you will see the flywheel as 'frozen' in that moment. With 650 'frozen' shots a minute, all taken with the flywheel at the same position - you will read a steady picture as if the flywheel was standing still.
This is what happens when you lock the ignition.
Forget about the reading when not locked, you will only be more confused!!!!!!
It is all a little of David Copperfield - an illusion, but still real.
What you see is a flywheel standing still, in reality it is rotating around 650 rpm!!!
Got it???????????????????????????????????????????????????

Re: Diagnostic software

You would be better off to read and study the factory service manual so you know what you are doing. It saves a lot of grief and possibly saves you money by not damaging something or needlessly replacing parts.

You first have to set the timing pointer per the service manual so it is exactly in line with TDC on the engine, otherwise your timing offsett from using the software will be incorrect and could damage the engine.

These are not your grandfather's outboards that could be kept running with a screwdriver and a Crescent wrench. They are more like today's cars that are high-tech and computer controlled, so more knowledge and specialized equipment is needed to service them.

I am trying real hard to get it but it is confusing. You said cylinder #3. Is this right? I have #1 that I was told to use.
Also can you see the flywheel stopped with the light after it is locked without a mark? Please don't get aggravated with me for being so dense.

Thanks again

Re: Diagnostic software

I think I have it now. I was under the assumption that you need to mark the flywheel to be able to see the timing with the light. I did not know you could see the timing without a mark. Now everything makes sense.

Thanks for all the help.
