Smart move! Once you get the factory service manual and do some reading then you will understand more about the engine and drive system.
Nothing wrong with having a shop fix it right the first time then start learning how to do the regular service yourself...;)

Hey Plasma, welcome to the marine side of engineering applications!


There is no neutral gearing or clutching between the engine and the drive, so the driveshaft moves anytime the engine moves. That is one difference between I/O config and other applications that is not always driven home when diving into boat architecture. Neutral and reversing are handled lower in the drive. Your model of I/O has the raw water pump inside the drive and it also turns anytime the drive turns. Other brands do not have the pump in the drive but rather have it on the engine, so the considerations are the same, they all need a water supply to protect the rubber impeller ANYTIME the engine is going to move/start. The engine can be run without cooling for a few minutes, but the impeller has to have water. There are other similar differences that you will find especially in the cooling plumbing.
