Hi folks. I just bought two new tires for my trailer. They are 195/75/r14. I have a 2001 sx190 Skeeter. I am new to this boat and I honestly did not think about trailer tires versus regular tires. Am I safe?...I really dont want to buy another set. Thanks in advance for any help...

Sandman,

Check the tire sidewalls for the load rating. (If it doesn't give a number of pounds, but instead a letter "load range C" you'll have to look it up.)

Get a fairly accurate weight of your trailer and boat, add 300 pounds or so for fuel, and 300 pounds for incidentals, and see if you're still way under the load rating of the the two tires added together.

I'm sure someone will have a more accurate way to determine all this, but my way should work for a guesstimate.

Do you have one axle (2 wheels) or two axles (4 wheels)?

Thanks Dave. I have a one axle trailer. Best I can figure the total weight counting motor, trailer, fuel, boat, incidentals is about 3000 lbs. I will check those tires tomorrow...thanks alot.

sounds like you almost need a class D trailer tire. class C would be good for about 3,600 lbs.

What were the old tires that you had on the trailer?

Just look at the tire sidewall. All tires will list the maximum load rating in pounds on the sidewall. That is a rating per tire, so you would need a load rating of 1500 pounds.

Re: Did I Buy The Wrong Tires For My Trailer???

Just went thru the same thing and had removed the wheels and took them to Sams Club where my wife was working. They did not have my size and reminded me that I had to use a class c tire. Also, they would not even consider putting a car tire on what appeared to be a trailer rim (glavanized, 6 spoke).

Went to another tire store and did get my tires. Asked the guy about car tires and he made me aware of all the benefits of the trailertire. Mostly stronger sidewalls minimize swaying etc. He also said he could get fired for mounting car tires on a trailer rim.

If that is what you ended up with, I would return them....

Good advice guys..thanks . I talked with the tire salesman today and he told me to bring them back and he would swap them for a 1760 lb. load rated tire. The others are 1400 max. I wanted trailer tires but there is no where here that sales them. I dont know why. Also, I am going on vacation Tuesday 8-5 and I dont have time to order via net. These will have to do..they will get me way over my weight. This forum is always a big help..its great:)
