Did I damage my stator during flywheel removal? Pics

I just looked at my stator on the bench and hope I didnt damage it. I have my '84 115 apart for rebuild. When I removed the flywheel looks like I might have gone in with the 3 bolts a bit too far (I knew this about removal and thought I was careful).

I just happened to peek at the stator today and noticed 3 "dents" in the stator. The pics arent that clear, but it appears that they did go through the outter "covering" slightly. Is this a problem? What is the material, and just beneth? Arrrrggg, wasnt planning on replacing the stator just yet.

Thanks in advance.

That's a timer base, not a stator. And are you certain that's the top of it with the marks (I can't tell from those photos.)

It's hard to tell from those photos if there's any damage or not. Try getting a photo from about a 45 degree angle, it will show more.

Also, if you don't have a factory service manual yet you can at least go to the cdi electronics website and they've got an online guide for troubleshooting ignition components. There should be some simple resistance measurement you can do, if those are good I'd think you're probably ok.

Edit to add - are you certain those bolts even come all the way through the flywheel? In my head I'm picturing the jig I made for flywheel removal and comparing my memory of the timer base and it seems to me that even if they do make it through the flywheel those 3 bolts would fall inside the timer base and not hit it (though I might certainly be wrong about that).

Duhh, sorry...meant timer base. Silly me. I'll have to hold it together and put my puller on and see how things lined up and how far they went in, but sure looks like fairly fresh bolt marks. Does look like the top of it that faces underneath the flywheel

Its all apart, tomorrow I'll hold things together and put the bolts in my puller to see. Just looks suspect. wondering if I did mark up that surface, is it toast.

Thanks

It would have to be pretty bad to do any damage. Check out the test procedures on cdi's website and do whatever resistance checks they call for. If that's ok you're probably good.

I'd put the engine back together and test the timer base. Despite the apparent damage, the true test is if the timer base will output the correct voltage when cranking over the engine. My 86 service manual says that a special "peak-reading" voltmeter should read at least 0.3 volts from the sensor when cranking at 200-250 rpm's. If it does-run it the way it is.

Update: May help others who put the screws in a bit too far.

The Timer Base has a "cap" material, or covering. While I did put small "dents" into this material there was no damage. The bottom of each dent still has plastic...There was matalic material at the bottom that got me all nerveous. But it was residule material from re-tapping those holes previously, and the screw pushing that material into that plastic cap. The metal flaked off when scratched.

So, no damage....no shorts to ground, and its resistance checks out, according to the manual.

The true test will be when you go to start the mtr.
