OK, here is the backstory, Bought the boat, at the dock after fishing it wouldnt start - no fuel. So I tow it home and decide Im going to rebuild the carb. Take it out to the lake and it doesnt run well. Sputter on rapid accel and dies on rapid decel. I take the carb to get rebuilt by a guy at a carb shop, (Not a kid behind a counter but a 60+ yr old guy with his own shop looks like 20+ years of parts and gaskets all over and he knows exactly where everything is kinda guy). Anywho, drain and refill the tank, install rebuilt carb and head to the lake, a tad better but still the same prob =/ It idles ok, smooth accell its good but it just isnt right. Ive been told to check the Distributer, fuel pump ect but none of that changed. 1982 OMC 3.0L 2 Jet Roch

Any Ideas?????

I kind of need more info on engine make model, and year to see what these symptoms may lead to. And yes even a seasoned carb builder can make mistakes. He may also be able to look at it for you and see if it could be adjusted to run better or notice other problembs.

Did you purge the fuel line that hooks up to the carb before attaching the line to the carb ??

Purge the fuel line? If you mean of air, yes no air in the line, I have had it sit and idle for 30 min. Cant bring it back to the guy, work was done last year and he is no longer in buisness (ilness).

I was talking fuel before the line was connnected to the carb.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... There ain't no Easy button,...

None of that changed, 'n ya Still have the same problem,..??
At this point, any of 'em could be the culprit...

An '82, I'm guessin' has Points, which need changin' pretty much Every year,....
'n I believe yer fuel pump, has a Filter in it....
What did ya find in the fuel you removed,..?? Water,..?? Did it Smell like gas,..??

Re: Did I destroy my carb?

Before I rebuilt the carb the motor ran great, no issues, therefore I assume they would be still in good shape. I understand there can be other issues but the fact that only the rebuild took place and there is now an issue keeps me from tinkering elsewhere, then I would have 2+ known areas the problem could be. This logic seems sound to me yet I do understand and accept there could be another issue. I have a full tune up set (plugs/wires/cap/rotor/points) and will change them out next time I have a chance.
I did not purge the fuel line, but i ran the motor at least enough to burn all the fuel before I had it rebuilt by the pro and at least as much since then.

If the motor ran great why did you rebuild the carb?

Hindsite is 20/20
Running the tank dry a friend said I should rebuild because all 'the crap' would of been sucked up into it.
One thing I noticed, (which may be 100% normal) is the throttle on the carb when unhooked from the linkage, will advance (clockwise) to about 2:30ish, but will also go counterclockwise (from 'rest or neutral) to about 11:00

Re: Did I destroy my carb?

Went to replace the tune up parts, figured Id start it to be sure it would run, no spark. Followed the flow chart in the manual, found voltage at the neg terminal of the coil with the points open - book says defective coil-replace. Got a new coil, did the tune up parts, no spark. Check and still voltage at neg terminal of coil with points open. Disconected wires from coil - power on pos wire, no power on neg wires or the wire from the dist. New Defect coil? Am I doing something wrong? Ohm meter on pos-neg terminals shows 1.6 with a 200 under the decimal point, pos terminal to coil wire plug in 8.75K with a 20 under the decimal point neg terminal to coil wire plug in also 8.75k 20 under the decimal point.
Im a chassis guy, brakes and suspension, this electrical stuff is all greek to me.

Points were pitted, rotor and cap were a bit also, plugs fuel fouled (suprise) Is it possible these and the coil were my issues from the start?

Quickly learning that what I herd is true.... The only thing that works on an old boat is the owner

Re: Did I destroy my carb?

There is a short in the Tac wires, I have no Tach on the boat so I disco the neg and its running. Took the top off the carb, fuel lvl was about 1/3 in the bowl, tweeked the float a tad now its about 2/3 full. Found some rust in the filter @ the carb, looks like a tank flush/seal/replacement is in the future.
When I went to put the top back on the carb I noticed there were several ways the linkage would 'fit', after a bit of experamenting I found what I belive best. It runs fairly smooth and idles down low now, I still get stumbling/backfire at times if I snap the throttle (linkage unhooked). Working on finding a Dwell meter and a tach so I can zero those 2 out.

After a few min of idleing the motor will die, If I bump the ignition it fires right up but after a few min it just dies, then kicks right over when I bump the key, intermittant short somewhere??
