wooooo..
frist of all warranty is a complete separate issue. i NEVER spoke to him about warranty and don't really expect it in fact. So there is no way in hell that he can assume that if i got the part he should still cover warranty. in fact if that question was raised i would have told him no just put the part and no warranty.

I think the BS meter has just pegged.

I completely agree that $50hr is cheap. If the guy is trained marine mechanic he probably deserves to be paid $50 hr. I am sure you wouldn't want a guy from Taco Bell making tacos to work on your boat right? Even if he charges me $8/hr I wouldn't let him touch my boat.

I also would understand his frustration in bring up using a different part (auto alternator) on a boat. Do you bring your own steaks to a restaurant and have them cook it for you because it's cheaper? Lol!!

Anyway, It's great if you work on your own stuff as long as you know what you are doing. If a car breaks down, you are still on the ground. If a boat breaks down......Hmmmm I can think of 100's of horrific things that can happen.

Great
Go have the alt tested as suggested in the other thread.
If you download the manual from the link, you will be good reattaching it..Unless yours is a one wire then its pretty much a no brainer
Me, I take pics sometimes

Good luck

Re: did i do something wrong here to **** the mechanic off??

I have seen the scenario a few times in my life.

It sounds as though you and the mechanic met. He saw a business opportunity, and you saw a way to save some $$. No harm done. When it came time to have work done, this mechanic immediately thought, due to the circumstances, that he had your business no matter what. Now with that said, I don't think he tried gouging you for money, I just think you assumed it would be a real cheap rate, and he knew the costs at dealerships or shops and charged a bit less. When you went and got another quote from another "mechanic" that was a bit cheaper, and it annoyed him that his gauranteed business turned into keeping the boat at his place (it sounds that way from the original post) for $60. In this economy I could imagine thinking your going to make $2000 this week, and then losing the customer has to hurt.

Now what he should have done is discussed it with you like a reasonable business man. Maybe not come down to the $1500 you were going to pay the other guy, but had he said, $1700 and if you have any problems I'm a phone call away, could have saved his business.

Taking the boat back to him after his outburst was a mistake, plain and simple. The alternator and belt job, did you guys dicsuss price before hand? Other than asking about car alternators what was the conversation? I assume if he charged you and did the work you had to have discussed it before hand?

well in regard to uninsured, unavailable later to own up to misrepairs persons doing repairs ,A good friend purchased a sailboat from a friend who had an autopilot installed by a "dock boy".
Then while on an overnight to Catalina my friends guests put down thier 3 yr. old in the fo'cle , I suppose he was intrigued by the sound of the chain drive and stuck 3 fingers and pulled out some stubs ,thankfully my pal is a doc and was able to save the childs fingers ,my pals friend whom he purchased the vessel from and hired the dock boy was sued and lost his entire fortune, 8 million$ at 50 yrs old, cut to 30 yrs later, the childs finger are usable and my pals friend is still broke
When I do work on my boat I make sure it's up to coast guard specs or beyond ,such as removing the illegal fuel tank(side mount fill) and reinstalling a certified U.S.C.G.(stamped)tank.
If you are contemplating work on your vessel make sure you understand liability goes on FOREVER.

So let me get this right. The average marina labor rate around here is $115/hr, and the guy who does the work is a yard ape, doesn't know chit from shinola 'cept what he's told, and makes $10/hour.

The OP gets an experienced tech and thinks $50/hour is too much...

Jeez, Louise...

BTW, I make nothing on parts, just my labor...

I found out the hard way, that after 2 years of having my own atv shop. While I cant say his attitude is appropriate with customer service, I can certainly understand the emotions he has. After customer upon customer trying to rape you on parts and labor, and dont get me started on selling used units, you start to get less and less concerned about customers feelings. I once had a customer that came in to "buy" a set of tires for his atv. after spending an hour showing him tires and pricing, he decided on a set. To sweeten the deal I gave him a discount off msrp and offered to install them free if he bought all four. Two weeks later he came back with the tires he had bought off of ebay and was furious when I would not install them for free!

But, I sure wouldnt hhave gone back the second time.
