Did I get lucky or what?

So I was oil leaking out of my lower unit (89' Johnson 110) so I took into the shop and the seals were shot, and I guess the lower unit was full of water.....and the motor was outside all winter, below 0 degrees at times. How lucky am I that the lower unit didn't crack?

I would say extremely, that is why I always change my lower oil last before I put the boat away for the winter, go buy a lottery ticket now and see if your luck is transferable.

VERY LUCKY!

This is exactly why gear lube is changed in the fall.

I know that the oil should have been changed in the fall but it was because, there was NO sign of an oil leak so knowing that I figured that there was no water in it. And I cold not get the screws loose to drain the lower unit, I used an impact driver and still had no luck. I know that I got lucky and it was dumb to not drain it. But c'mon, its a Johnson, i'd expect nothing less. . So the oil should be changed at the end of the season and the start of the next season? The mechanic said the lower unit was in excellent shape, but he also said the impeller looked like it was original...that was hard to swallow.

To me it means that it gets below 70 in december unlike FL and we have to put our boats away.

Change the fluid at the end of the season before you store it. You don't need to do again in the Spring.
