Did I get taken?

I recently carried my 13' Whaler with a 40hp Johnson in to the local shop to have the carbs looked at. The mech cleaned them both and put carb kits in both. The bill came out to be $175. I think this is a little high just for rebuilding 2 carbs. Am I being taken for a ride? Or does this sound about right? Thanks for the help.

Re: Did I get taken?

Have you tried it out at the lake yet? When you do, if it wants to bog down when you give it the gas, don't keep trying to run it. You could cause piston damage

carbs kist are $19 a peice thats about $40 bucs in material labor cost on the average should be twice the material cost so they should of charged you around $120 but even that is to hig to just rebuild two carbs it only takes 10 mins per carb to do next time do it your self

father just had his carbs rebuilt by a johson dealer for his 75 hp tracker the charged him $80

depends on whos doing the work

ppjmb5 Do you also write flat rate manuals?

While it doesn't take much time to strip/reassemble a carb.10 minutes seems a little light, unless you can do it without removing them from the engine,or drilling out core plugs, and cleaning passages.Don't forget the synch and link.
DHP

Re: Did I get taken?

I'd be impressed to see someone just remove the carbs in 10 minutes. Without a sledge hammer of course.

How do you figure that the labor should be twice the material costs? If thats what you pay your help, I'm gonna come work for you and do nothing but change new powerheads and lower units.

175 is very fair. 10 min a carb ?? it takes longer then that to clean it and blow it out.i dont think u can even slam a carb together in 10 min. much less set the new float the right way. if u can do it in 10 min why did your dad go to a johnson dealer to have his carbs done?? haha

Sounds like "soda money" to me, especially if the mill runs correctly.

Cape..

I don't think it's out of line. After troubleshooting (with the help of all of the input here in this forum-thanks guys) I finally replaced my power pack and it ran fine for about 15 minutes then started missing. I finally brought it to a marine dealer and when they checked it, it ran fine for them for 30 minutes, go figure. They charged me $60 just to listen to it run. After consulting here on the forumn the mechanics say it is customary to charge 1 hr min.

Beck,

ps: I think it was some air in my gas line which made it start to miss. They used a different gas line. But they didn't tell me anything. I just noticed my gas plug was tampered with. But at least my little rig is cruising now.

Re: Did I get taken?

That's $245 Canadian. Kits are $30 x 2 = $60
It takes me 3-4 hours for 3 carbed 65hp to remove, clean, rebuild, replace, clean up mess it makes in motor, and muff test. (I have done it a few times)
3 hours at $60/hr = $180
Total $240
He may be a little pricey but not too bad

Re: Did I get taken?

Did you get taken? No. If you had taken it to a shop that does carb jobs in 10 minutes, you would've been. Can't be done! TOTALLY Unrealistic! If you do a GOOD job, it'll take all of 2 hours. You might be able to synchronize them in 10 minutes, but to remove, disassemble, clean, reassemble, reinstall, synchronize, and test run? Heck, the test run alone Better take at least 10 minutes or the motor isn't even warm enough to get real world running characteristics. If you find a shop that claims they can do a carb in 10 minutes...RUN! All they're going to do is shoot the outside with some carb spray and SAY they went through them. They sure will LOOK clean. Won't help your problem, though.

I remember seeing a news story about car shops that did bogus work. They took a car to one garage and said the battery was going dead. Nothing was actually wrong with the car. The garage took the alternator off, cleaned it, painted it, put it back on, and charged for a new alternator. THAT's being taken!

Re: Did I get taken?

omg what i meant was once the carbs are off apart and blown it should only take ten mins to put a new seat float and gaskets on and put it back together most johnson gaskets are rubber so you dont have to take all the time of scrapping the old gasket off.

my point was this ;
it doesnet take them an hour to rebuild it for them to charge you for two hours of work is crazy is what im saying

i agree ,to get the carbs off is time consuming
i thought he had the carbs off and brought them in

my appoligeez

Zipper - Reprints are available from these places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
Ultimately, they all come from Ken Cook Co. They have the permission to copy them.
Keep your eye on ebay for used OEM manuals too. They go for a fraction of the cost of an original.
