Did I grind too much??

I am afraid that I may have ground too much out of the strakes? See attached. If so I was just going to repair it with some woven, if needed. The stringers will also sit in the strakes. Any recommendation on what weight of woven I should use?

I turned off all the lights and put a light under the hull to see how much light shined through. Quite a bit of light came through the strakes.

From the pictures it is hard to tell. Are the strakes fully gelcoated under the boat or is the gel worn off or thin? The reason I ask is that glass tends to transmit light better then you would think. The gelcoat blocks the light, so worn off gelcoat will make the hull look like it has a thin spot.

If it was me I would add one strip of 6" or so wide woven the length of the hull in each strake, but nothing too heavy. Something in the 18oz range would be more then enough in my opinion.

There is a small chip in the gel coat on one of the strakes, but other than that they look pretty good. I was planning on repairing the chip. You could really see the light coming through where the chip was located. I will probably go ahead with the woven. Probably have to put some PB down in the strakes to get it to lay right. Just hope I don't get too carried away with it.

You already got it figured out...

I would put down a layer of CSM maybe an inch wider in each direction the full length of the strake, then fill strakes completely with PB (this will make tabbing the stringers layer way easier since you won't have to have the tabbing conform to the crazy valleys in the strakes). Cover PB with a layer of 6" wide 1708 or CSM and roving and call it fixed.

Forget the woven. The grind looks great! If your using poly then lay 1708 which has csm on the back side. If EEEEPPpoooxxxyy then order 1700, no csm required.
Actually you can just fill the strakes with pb. Add chopped glass if poly, no glass needed for eeppoooxxxy.
Then get into the rest.

I was going to say, you should grind a bit more.

kcassells has you covered on poly vs epoxy. I would use poly.

When you think you ground enough....you need to go back over and grind more

I left the stuff on the sides of the hull as a guide to cutout the deck. I will grind it off after I cut the deck templates. Do you think anything else needs ground besides that?

Well i attempted to grind some more on the light colored spots in the strakes and ended up grinding a hole in the hull... and a matching one on my finger. :blue::blue::blue: Should have stopped while I was ahead.

No worries, can be easily fixed. When it's all grinded smooth you can lay some glass down to make up for that. As for the finger I feel ya there, my boat has a ton of my blood sealed up in the stringers lol, I even got a piece of fiberglass in the eye early in the project, wasn't a fun time walking around looking like a pirate.

I was gonna use 4 layers of 1708 over the hole. Think that will be enough? I have 2 layers down so far but on second thought that doesn't seem like enough. Also, when you are getting ready to lay down more layers of glass and resin, is it necessary to sand on the stuff that has already set up to get good adhesion?

I would think so on the inside then use the CSM outside because it is better for bodyworking sands smoother.

I'd go 4 layers and make each piece bigger than the last by an inch or two all around. An additional piece of 1708 on the outside is probably also a good idea before csm
