Ok a couple of weeks ago I got lazy and ran the motor without the muff for 10 seconds.

I just wanted to test the battery.

OK this was stupid I know. Now I have no water flow under the Outdrive.

Did I really trash the Impeller. I haven't inspected it yet.

My opinion would be no, thats too short of time to damage it, however I am sure someone else will tell you yes!

Thanks.

Im very green to working on my Boat. I just looked at the service manual on how to pull the Impeller. This might be a trip to the Boat Shop.

I am not sure what set up you have but I have changed my impeller twice already. Its a really easy job on my set up. What engine do you have?

Extracted Impeller.

Distroyed it.

Now the question is did 10 Secs running it dry cause this.

Now the search is on to find a replacement.

Here is the impeller I need VOLVO PENTA 825940. Do I need to get some lube for the impeller.

Would it help if I provide engine Model numbers.

If the impeller was already on its way out, yes, that could be enough time to do that. My first question would be. How many times was this engine started for only 10 seconds with out water?

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

This was the first time since I owned the boat 18 months ago that I ran it dry. I do not know the condition of the impeller before this incident.

I will chalk this one up to lessson learned.

BTW the engine never over heated which is a Good thing.

I didn't know the history of the boat. That was just a cover all statement. Sometimes impellers just get bridle and begin cracking and that might be the start of it, from there it only needs one more little element to finish it.

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

From the pictures I would say it was dry rotted, not because it was ran dry. You say you have never changed it in over 18 months! it was just on its way out. Probably would have done the same in the water. I have had my boat just over two years and had to change my impeller that looked as bad as yours once (first time ) then this year it was already missing a spline or two so i changed it again. The mechanic at the marina where I go said, its almost a yearly change part.

As far as lube goes: he gave me a tip to use dish soap on installation. This way it lubes it up for installation and you will see the bubbles on first run and know its working properly!

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

The Volvo Impeller kits include a small pack of Glycerine based lube. I too had to replace my impeller this year the original was 8 yrs old. Exhaust over heat came on, temp gauge still was normal. Had to wait 5 minutes for someone to come along to tow me back to the launch. My Impeller still had one vane intact. Found most of the broken vanes in the hoses, and a few pluging up the inlet and outlet of the pump housing. Hopefully the rest are not going to plug up the drains on the block.

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

Yes I confess I haven't changed the impeller since I owned the boat from 18 months. It was changed just before I purchased it. I was going to have it change after peak boating season.
The boat hasn't been in storage for any lengh of time.

So another lession learned. Change Impleller Annual.

Still I will not run the boat dry again.

Thanks all.

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

Yes, never dry, but that impeller looks pretty bad for 18 months. I have had one that looks just as bad on my Merc Bravo (similar pump) after 2 years. I do start in shallow water, with sand, often and I figure that can't help it much . . .

Volvo says Inspect very 50 hours, replace as necessary, or every two years, whichever occurs first. Looks like you dodged a bullet actually. The dry start didn't help, but that thing was struggling already if you ask me.

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

Prior boat owner said impeller changed just before I bought the Boat. I didn't inspect it and he didn't have any documentation. Yes I dodge the bullet and didn't have to have a first time tow.

Boat sellers lie no matter how noble they are in "real life", it is like they get taken over while talking or writing about the boat they are selling!

As far as lube, I read here on iBoats (and have used successfully) that some dish soap works great. It helps get the impeller in, and washes off as soon as you start up. I guess an added bonus would be you could wash the dinner dishes under the exhaust in hot water!

50 hrs, 2 years? Hmm I got 330 hrs and 8 years out of mine.
