KY jelly works great too!

That impeller did not get like that from 10 seconds. It was already like that.

I once started my engine and then proceeded to lower the drive right on top of the hose pinching it off. I ran for a couple minutes before realizing what I did and it still didn't look too bad. I replaced it anyway.

50 hrs, 2 years? Hmm I got 330 hrs and 8 years out of mine.
On a Volvo impeller? I have heard stories about OMC stringer ones lasting that long. They are so easy to change on a Volvo that running with one that long is just asking for it. The impeller ends up failing when you least expect possibly overheating your engine and you get broken pieces of impeller everywhere. Not a good thing at all!

It's easy once you get to the front of the engine. To get to it the back seat has to come out. To remove the back seat several other items have to be removed.

Still should be replacing it every 2 years.

What luck! I found a place that has my Impeller Kit in stock for $45. I will be picking it up Friday.
Now I can say I know how to replace a Impeller. May not sound like a big deal to some but to me it is.

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

i have grown up around boats my whole life, and have ran boats on the hose with the muffs and everything. lately i've been starting my boat dry at the house just to make sure it fires up and runs before I get to the lake so when i launch its ready to go. LOW and behold, it was overheating BAD at the lake this weekend and now after all this researching, starting a boat dry i guess will kill the impeller quick. man, can't believe i made this rookie mistake!! just dropped it off at the mechanic to do the impeller, i thought about doing it myself but this will just be easier for now.

starting to wonder what other rookie mistakes i'm making despite being around boats for awhile?

Just sold my 1986 Four Winns 190 Horizon. Changed the impeller before I sold it. Was the first time I had changed it in 9 years. Saved the old one for a spare as it still looked perfect! Not brittle or cracked at all.

Still should be changed every 2 to 3 years. I am guessing you have an OMC Cobra which is the ultimate in simplicity to change. Way better to change it than risk overheating your engine.

Nothing i hate more than having one of my customers run their engine dry after i have installed a new impeller for them, took 4 impellers for one guy he just had to make sure it would run before going to the river. Good for you doing this yourself!! Tom

Extracted Impeller.

Distroyed it.

Now the question is did 10 Secs running it dry cause this.

Now the search is on to find a replacement.

AZBOATDREAMER,
I am really shocked that no one has told you to try and find the pieces to the impeller that were lost. Some of these pieces could be stuck in the cooling pathways somewhere either in your engine block, heads, intake, risers or thermostat housing. I would at a minium remove the thermostat housing and check the small hose ports this is where I found a piece of my old impeller. Hopefully you got lucky and they passed through, but more likely there are a couple of pieces stuck that could give you cooling problems later. Good luck.

Re: Did I really Damage My Impeller

Come to think of it (minor hijack), is it only on the I-4 engines that the sea water strainer is actually after the sea water pump, and hence, any impeller parts should end up there and not clog the heat exchanger (or worse, the oil cooler)?

Anyone thought of (if any) the design ideas or consideration are when placing the strainer before or after the sea water pump?

I don't believe AZ has a closed cooling system on hs boat. At least he hasn't mentioned it.
