Re: Did I ruin my motor??? (cracked exhaust)

I found a parts motor WHEW!!!

Between the two I should get one good motor (Spring Chinook are biting!!!)

I have removed the following bolts

1) hex bolt that holds zinc plate
2) Two nuts on either side of hex bolt underneath cavitation plate.
3) nut at front top of exhaust housing right up from LU

I can't find anymore and don't see anymore listed. I am getting my parts motor in the next couple of days and will see if that LU comes off, then transfer exhaust hous

I dont know your motor, but my merc has another allen head bolt from inside where you removed what you are calling the "zinc plate" I dont know the proper name for that thing, maybe it is zinc plate. But you may find a bolt inside there that takes the same allen wrench.

Good luck newbie. Having a little patience will go a long way for you. Just be sure when you are removing the motor leg to soak all the bolts and nut well with penetrating spray and let it work before you start trying to loosen them. If the motor has been in saltwater, some of them are bound to seize will just have to be twisted off (maybe). I've done that before and had to take the motor leg to a machine shop and have them drill em out and helicoil the original hole (pricey but doable). Hope you clean up on the Spring Chinook. I'm going after redfish and trout down here.

quick update

The water inlets are a part of the LU and cannot be removed.

The exhaust housing is coming apart in pieces.
I have gotten the front of the lu to get to about 3/16 inch wide. I have emptied and extra large can of WD40 in the opening.

Still no relief AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

more to follow
