Did Yamaha start re-cycling serial numbers?

The serial number of my 15hp Yamie is : 684K S 1057789 J. Model number 15MSH.


[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Everything on the internet indicates this number refers to an '89 but I bought it new in '09.[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Can someone tell me what year it is. Please note the controls are situated on the front of the engine. I'm sure they didn't do anything that dumb back in '89!

That error indicates your pix is too large, max upload sixe is 750KB, even the cheapest camera phone takes higher res pix then 750KB

I have read that when they made more motors than they could sell the year they were made , they would sell the new motor in later years.

As far as I can tell they did not make a 15MSH in 89,
at least they do not list one
199? to 2005 they had a 4th letter in the model # That indicated the year model and they had a plate/sticker that stated the month and year of production
2006 on they depend on the serial # to indicate when it was made

Not sure what makes you think it was a 89

I was told this was an '89 when I e-mailed a technician at I Boat and posed the question. When I wrote back and explained that it couldn't possible be a '89. He blew me off. Not a very good start to a relationship with a retailer.

I've been having trouble with the bottom cylinder missing, especially on cold start up. Compression is good. Swapped plugs, coils, without results.

Thought of trying a corroborator kit next.

Ok... the nearest dealer (who I trust), is six hundred miles away. And it's all water!

Anyway, that's my sad story.

Yes, I was surprised, but mostly disappointed.
And while I've got my soapbox out... why won't I-Boat open an account for me. I have an American bank, an American credit card, and an American address. But just because I'm on my boat in the islands, they assume I'm foreign and won't open an account.

There are thousands of Americans sailing in the islands who are in need of all kinds of parts. And like me, have a US based shipper who will handle forwarding by air or ship. Mine is in Ft. Lauderdale. I-Boat only has to process my order and ship to Lauderdale. No big deal. I and many others do it all the time. But just because my computer is in the DR, I'm locked out.

Ok, may be I could call and make special arrangements with I Boat, but why should I chase them to give them my money? There are tons of other suppliers that are more responsive.

bcripps/Bry take a deep breath, we are here to help you, this forum will help you get it fixed. Lets stop thinking about the year for a moment and zero in on what's wrong with your motor.

My gut say this is a timing problem,because the bottom cylinder is missing. It could be the trigger somebody test it, The metal key way holding the flywheel in the correct spot broke the flywheel moved,now the timing is off. Is the flywheel still lined up with the keyway slot on the crankshaft?

If you can borrow a timing light to check the timing,or find somebody. On the carbs get the largest drill bit that will go into the idle jet and gently clean out idle jet. Don't get the carburetor rebuild kit just yet. Test the C. D, module if you have it on your motor.

Check back and give us an update after your motor testing.

Tom I do not see how timing would just affect #3 cylinder,
But a leak in a fuel pump would affect #3 on most 3 cylinder motors as that is the crankcase where the pump gets its pulse.
But that would not be only at cold start up.
So carb cleaning is a good direction even if you do not have a kit

99yam40 your right, I'm not so sure Bry has the problem diagnosed correctly. Do you think it's spark? Is it trigger, coil, c.d.module,rectifer, spark plug wire, bad plug.

Could it be just a bad electrical connection ?

How did you diagnose it's the bottom cyl was the problem. What is the crust around the head gasket and since it does it mostly cold could be a lean sneeze. Can you put a video up.

When I pulled the plugs, the bottom one was fouled. I cleaned it and swapped plugs. And the bottom one fouled up again. New plugs made no difference to performance.

[FONT=Helvetica, Arial]Have been reluctant to take the carb apart without a gasket kit. The outboard powers my inflatable and is the only transportation I have to get ashore. And presently, it does run. But not well[/FONT]

Does this motor have 2 carbs?
I do not see the second carb or linkage in the 2nd pic you posted.
And I guess this is a pre mix as I do not see an oil tank

Parts breakdown shows fuel pump on 2nd carb and you say you have already checked that.

Might post a pic of the fouled plug for everyone to see.

Good compression, good spark, it would have to be a fuel problem unless there was water getting to the bottom plug.

I ran into a 25 Johnson years ago that would start missing after running ,shutting down, and then starting back up. Had to pull the plug, clean it off, and reinstall to get it to fire again.
Ended up pulling head off, resurfacing the head,and with new gaskets fixed the problem.
But you have not said anything about water on plug
Does not need much salt water to short out a plug.

with all the crusting on head gasket it may be something to look for

Why do people think this is a 3 cyl or has more than one carb. The picture shows 2 CYL and 1 Carb basic set up for A 15 hp.

No water on the plug. Trying to up load a photo but PhotoBucket isn't cooperating this afternoon. We call that a third world issue around here. I'll try again in the morning.
