i have a 73 evinrude that just had the carbs cleaned. starts great, idles fine , but when i shift it into gear...sadly it just dies. i was out on the water today and stopped to fish for awhile. then this happened. i was out there about 15 minutes messing with it, trying to get it to go. finally i revved it up, pushed the idle arm down and quickly shifted wot throttle. it caught enough to get it going. thought it was a one time thing. stopped. repeat scenario. came home. got on iboats and based on what i read want to if it's the link and sync. i am going to order the manual but does anyone have diretions to do this link and sync or any suggestions to what it might be? compression on all cylinders were 125 when i last check about two weeks ago. i know it will take the manual at least a week to get here and i really want to get back out on the water. any help?

thanks in advance...

once you got in to gear how did it run? could you bring your boat back down to idle while in gear?

yes i could bring it back down and up again but if i turn it off and then did it, it would take me to what seems forever to get it to go.

hmm thats odd, does it happen to do it when your switching into reverse as well? i feel like your problem is in your lower end, not your carbs.

I had this problem friday... i was out there 30 mins and finally had someone dragged me in.. what mine turned out to be was a kinked fuel line coming from filter straight into carbs... it would idle but assoon as i put it in gear and it needed more gas it died.... So i just replaced all my fuel lines and bulb.... Just trace all your lines just to be sure.. but since you said you had yours going im not sure... hmmmmm

Did you forget to vent the tank? Sounds like either an idle adjustment or fuel delivery. When I forget to vent I have your problem. Just an idea.

750 -800 at idle , you can set the idle adj, screw by turning it clockwise or untill it bottoms out at the rubber stop.
