Diesel engines....

I don't know if this is the correct place to post my question, but here goes.

What is the smallest diesel engine you can get in a 30-35 foot cruiser. Because of the size, I am guessing that there would need to be twins.

This is an option I'm looking into for when the time comes to move up to a larger boat.

all depends on how fast you want to go! There are 30 footers with single 50 hp diesels in them.

There's plenty of boats longer than 35 feet with single engines. If they are not planing hulls, 100 HP would be plenty as the hull sped on such a boat is only 7.5 knots or so.

For a planing hull, there's a whole bunch of variables that would determine planing speed, and once that is known, HP can be selected to best suit the boat. If a 35 footer can plane at 15 knots, it may only need 300 HP in total, if it needs to be going 20 knots to be on plane, it may need 530 HP.

I know there are marine diesels from Hino, cummins, perkins available, HP's unknown.

Yeah need more info eastont to answer this. There are even diesel OBs for example One thing for sure Power Density, which is the size/weight to hp ratio, has gone waaaaaay up in the last 20 years.
