Anyone have experience with diesel outboards?

I know they exist, or at least have existed in the past. I know of a salmon fishing resort that had them back in the mid ninetys here in British Columbia They apparently had problems starting them in the morning so they just kept them idling all night!

I don't remember the brand, Daihatsu maybe.

I know yanmar makes or used to make a 3 cylinder producing 27 and 36 horsepower.

Re: Diesel Outboard

It is so quiet. I cant believe it.

A diesel outboard would be cool. Finding a mechanic to work on it, not so cool.

The 55MFE Military Spec motor is only meant to run on alternate fuels in a pinch, they don't run well or very long on diesel or other fuels due to the carbon issues created by those fuels.
Plus, the $22,000 price tag compared to about $8,000 for a civilian model is a bit hard to swallow for the ability to run diesel, jet A, or any other fuel in a pinch.
That option would only be valid to me if I were being shot at and needed to get away, and had no gasoline at hand. Mercury also makes an Optimax 3.0 JP version with the same basic idea.

Didn't Nissan make a diesel outboard a number of years ago? I seem to recall seeing them in a mail order catalog about 15 or so years ago?

I'd be up for a diesel outboard if they built a smaller motor which compared to a gas motor weight and power wise. The problem would most likely still be cost, with modern outboards being so expensive, I'd expect a good diesel to be about double a comparable gas motor?

Re: Diesel Outboard

Ive seen them on workhorse ribs from Northstar oil ...
never understood why they are so so expensive. diesel is so much more simple and reliable.
there are/were also kerosene outboards available.

now LPG outboards wld be awesome ... save save save
IIRC yamaha make them.

Re: Diesel Outboard

Nissan/Tohatsu has never offered a diesel outboard. They did offer a hybrid gasoline/kerosene model years ago in 3rd world countries. They do a a multi fuel engine that runs on a variety of fuels, however, like the E-tec MFE, it can't pass EPA standards(at least that is what I heard about the MFE) so it is relegated to military use.
