I have a mercury 1980 40hp mercury with low compression and have a chance to buy a 35 hp power head cheap. I am not concerned with the any power loss, but I was wandering if the lower unit and all the other parts would be able to bolt up to the 35 hp power head because they look quite similar. Any help would be apreciated.

If it's a newer 35, I think it will fit. Check the gasket numbers for the two engines

When you say newer you mean newer than 1980. Also I will go ahead and check gasket numbers.

If it is indeed a newer 35hp (newer than 1980) there will be no dropoff in power, as it was re-rated as a 35 after the switchover to rating the motors at the propeller. It's the same powerhead, at least as far as power output goes. I can't vouch for the extraneous stuff bolted to the powerhead....<br />- Scott
