I was reading specs of my 1978 70hp and notice the 75HP has the same bore and stroke, same carb, different timing. Can I get 5 more ponys out of my 70, of course when I get the darn thing to run good at WOT.

Yo, Scott. If you replaced whatever 70 parts with 75 parts the only thing you would notice is a lighter pocketbook. Horsepower numbers are sometimes manipulated for marketing purposes by varying Carb throats, reeds, timing advance profiles, and other, more subtle features. Often the "higher horsepower" engines are simply rated at a higher rpm.

You can gain more in hole shot and in top speed by optimizing your balance, prop and trim and by minimizing the drag of your hull than by adding 5 hp to the rating.

As corm says: cubic inches=power. If you really want more power, get a bigger engine.

Good luck.
JB

The cylinder head is diferent, but unless you have a performance hull you wont see much improvement. JB's right. Reduce your wetted surface (drag) and you'll see an increase.

Good luck!
