Difference between '93 120 and 140?

Hello Everyone,

I have a '93 120 HP Evinrude. I was going through the shop manual for the motor and it appears the 120 and 140 are both 2000cc. If that is the case, what are the differences?

20 HP is the difference. If you looked at a Chevy shop manual you'd find there are about 25 or 30 different horsepower listings for a 350 engine. On a two stroke, porting, carburetion, timing, and exhaust tuning can easily make 20 HP difference without changing displacement. Look at any sales brochures for all the brands of outboards and you will find at least two and generally three different HP ratings for the same size block. Been that way since Hector was a pup!

I realize the factors that can make the difference. I should have been more explicit. What changes add the twenty horse power to the 140?

I have had 428 Fords in everything from a Thunderbird to a GT 500. There is a little more that just ports and exhaust tuning, in the two engines I just mentioned, that adds a lot more than twenty horses. I understand what adds horse power and torque. Specifically, does anyone know what adds the twenty horse power.

You can find some of the differences by just looking at the parts catalogs for your engine where the carburetors are listed for both. All three jets are different on each set of carburetors.

It's usually in the breathing. Carb and exhaust.

I kinda assumed the carbs were different. I was wondering what else. I did not feel it was a simple as the difference between a 9.9 and a 15.
