I have a 1988 175hp Johnson engine with stripped splines on the crankshaft and driveshaft. Because of the excessive cost to fix, I'm replacing it and am planning to take apart and attempt to "rebuild" the 1988 175hp Johnson motor. If I fail, I haven't lost anything. I have the shop manual and it keeps referring to do this or that depending on whether its a "loopback" or "crossflow" engine but I haven't found out how you find out what kind of engine it is. Seems getting the right parts depends on knowing this information. Also, if anyone in layman's terms could explain what the difference is between a "loopback" and "crossflow" engine is I would appreciate it. Thanks!
