Difference between a "looper" and "crossflow" engine?

I have a 1988 175hp Johnson engine with stripped splines on the crankshaft and driveshaft. Because of the excessive cost to fix, I'm replacing it and am planning to take apart and attempt to "rebuild" the 1988 175hp Johnson motor. If I fail, I haven't lost anything. I have the shop manual and it keeps referring to do this or that depending on whether its a "loopback" or "crossflow" engine but I haven't found out how you find out what kind of engine it is. Seems getting the right parts depends on knowing this information. Also, if anyone in layman's terms could explain what the difference is between a "loopback" and "crossflow" engine is I would appreciate it. Thanks!

You have a 160 cid crossflow 175 made from 1986-91. It's the same as the 235 from 1980 to 85. The standard bore is 3.625". This 175 and the 235 have what is sometimes refered to as a "bubble back" exhaust. The 149 cid 150-175-200's have a flat exhaust plate. The crank and rods are the same between the 149 and the 160. The blocks and heads are different.

If it helps any, you can find used cranks to put in or the splines can be replaced.

A looper is a completely different animal. It sounds as if you have a generic manual. I would strongly suggest an OE manual before we start.

Good luck!

Thats a Clymer. It's OK but if you're gonna get into a rebuild I would go to a John/Rude dealer and get an OE manual. That will be very specific to what you have. The pictures will match!

Good luck!
