It's probably because I'm a rich Republican who didn't need, want or ask for a tax break! But anyway I have two boats, a 78 Silverline, 305 Chev, 260 mercrusier I/O & a 79 Searay, 350 chev 260 Merc I/O. I just started them both up on the muffs because it's been a month & when I disconnected the muffs I noticed steam comming off the 78 260 but not the 79 260. I went back to feel the 79 but it was cold. I touched it just above the prop shaft on the lower unit right above where the muffs hook up. It was 20 or 30 minutes later & I figured it should still be warm. So, my question is, is something wrong with the 1978 unit? Does it depend on cooling from being under water more than the other one? I probably did a cementhead thing as I ran them both in gear for 3 minutes in forward & 3 in reverse. I'll not do that again but as they both have new u-joints & bellows I thought it would be good to break 'em in. However, why did one heat up but not the other?

OBFG, I'm rotfl here. However, you may have a point. I did only check the thermostat on the hot boat but it seemed fine. Maybe I better replace it? I'll wait around a while to see what other input I get before I do that though. Thanks from Arnold country, BeenLurkin.

Yes, mate, I did. I was good and sure about that. That's why I do the work myself. However, I wouldn't put it past me. It sounds like an oversight I would commit. I'll check it in the morning just to be sure. I could have had a beer or two when the re-assembly occured. I didn't mention this in the original post but this boat runs on the hot side of normal. Right up against the red line. I have already checked the raw water impleller, the one in the lower unit, & it seems fine. It's weird because the other boat, the 1978 305 chevy 260 Mercruiser runs the other way. It won't heat up to normal running temps unless at 3000 rpm or so. Thanks for the input, Been.

The guages can be off too. I spent hours of time and some parts to find myself at the same running temp (close to the red line). I had replaced the whole impeller kit, thermostat, and temp sending unit. Also, took off and inspected my manifold & riser, and flushed out every hose. It was driving me crazy!

Then when I was at Walmart I saw a mechanical temp guage for $11.00. Bought it and attached it to my engine. Guess what? The temp is just fine!

What's really bizarre is that the original guage which isn't attached to the sending unit, sometimes shows the needle bouncing around as if it's reading a temp! I suppose there must be a short or something loose somewhere.
