Differences between 70's-80's 40-48-50hp models?

What are the differences between these models? Are some 2-cyl and some 3-cyl? When did they go to VRO? I currently have a 35hp 1985 Johnson SeaHorse and I would like to max out the HP to a 40hp. If the 40,48,50hp engines are the same weight, size, cowl, i would like to put a 50hp on it, with a 40hp cowl....

they are all the same except they are tuned different. some came in only certain models like he 48 normaly did not have trim and tilt from the factory. i wouldnt worry that much about changing out the cowling if your afrid of the coast guard. the model number says what horsepower it is

When you say "tuned" differently do you mean different sized carbs and/or larger exhaust ports? What all was "different"?

You can go to http://shop.evinrude.com and pull up the engine diagrams for any Johnson/Evinrude engine 1968 and later, so you can compare different models. It's usually not worth it to try to bump up from one HP to the next, unless you have a free donor engine lying around. It's common for there to be differences between carbs, pistons, heads, cranks, and exhaust housings.
