Everything is different, and nothing is interchangable with the older Alpha I drives.
The basic operation is about all that is the same. The Gen II's are also heavier duty than the orignals.

The Props will interchange between ALL of the standard production model Mercruisers,... Except the Bravo IIs,+ the TRs, etc......

The rams Might possiblily interchange,... But the Lines are Different,....So,.. It's Not a Direct Swap.........

Like Don says,........They're 2 Totally Different Animals........

Re: differences in alpha1 and alpha1 gen II

Have alot of boaters had trouble with GEN I water pumps? I'm just asking because I just bought an Alpha I, GEN I, Mercruiser 5.7 engine and out drive. I've owned a 30 ft inboard with a 318 chrysler, and an 18 ft center console with a 90 Hp Evenrude, but this is my first I/O boat set up, So I'm now tring to learn as much as I can about I/O systems. They seem to be more fussy then other types of engine and drive systems and seen to need more attention, and preventive matainence. Just "tooling" myself up for when I get My engine system installed. And Any help and information about alpha I, GEN I, would be greatly appreciated.

No, there are not a lot of problems with the Gen I water pumps, they just don't last as long as the Gen II. Two completely different type pumps. Run you AI for 2 years, then replace the impeller during winterization when you have the drive off and changeing the gear lube.

Here is a site with some information you might like.

http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm
