Hi all, managed to whack my prop yesterday. I have put a small chip out of all three blades and bent one of the blades. Lucky we were going at low speed.

The prop is a Mercury Laser II 20 P 48-16990 stainless steel prop.

A bit of Googling and there doesn't seem to be anywhere local to me that repairs props, however I can send it elsewhere in Australia to get repaired and am still looking at this option further.

My question for today though, is if I have to replace the prop, is there any other brands/models/materials that I should consider instead?

The 20 P seems to work well - it is the original prop fitted when the boat was new. When I purchased my boat it had a Mercury Vengance 18 P fitted (reference the discussion in this thread http://forums.iboats.com/prop-quest...mercury-vengence-18p-laser-ii-20p-527238.html ) - this was not the original prop but had been fitted instead, I swapped back to the original 20 P and had much better performance down low for take offs. Still achieves 75km/h top speed too.

The boat is a Haines Signature 520C ( http://www.signatureboats.com/content.aspx?pageid=37 ). The motor is a 2001 Mercury Saltwater series 115HP 4 cylinder 2 stroke quad carby outboard.

Cant help with shops in your area, though I would also check prop shaft as those SS props can send a huge shock through the lower unit.

Managed to find a local engineering shop who tell me they have repaired props before. Two of the blades only have small dents in them and one has a bend in it. Quoted $100.00 for the job, which is less than a quarter of a new replacement prop.

Unless the shop specializes in repairing props I would stay away. There is a lot that goes into getting a prop "right" like the pitch, cup, rake, and balance. If they don't have the tools or experience to check all and get it right I would use someone else. Laser 2s are plentiful used so you may want to look on Ebay for a nice used one.

Picked it up today. They have done a good job. Looks good again. $90.00 too which is cheaper than the quote!

He says they have some base that they put it into and the curve on the blades is set off that.
