Different Size outdrives?

Hey Guys,

Got a really dumb question. I've got an old Bayliner Contessa with twin penta 280 outdrives. The outdrives were off when I bought the boat, one looks recently rebuilt, the other I'm completely disassembling and reassembling due to a number of reasons.

Here's my Question: The newly rebuilt outdrive is actually shorter than the older one. The old one has a 1' drive "extension" between the intermediate and lower housings. What should I do? Will this make much of a difference?

Thanks,

Bob

I'm hoping you meant 1" not 1'.

Yeah that could be a problem.

Put the extension on rebuilt drive. or do you only have one extension?

Re: Different Size outdrives?

where does the cavitation/anti-ventilation plate fall in relationship to the hull at the transom on each of the drives. Since you have one with and one without, check to see whether you actually need one. Maybe you need to remove the extension from one. I'll assume since the rebuilt drive is shorter, they bought a replacement without checking. However I would verify whether you need one or need to remove the other first.

Just a thought.

Thanks guys. Yes, the extension was a 1". The boat is a Bayliner contessa 2850 with twin volvo penta aq225d's and volvo penta 280 outdrives. Both drives are off, so it's hard to tell exactly where that cavitation plate sat in reference to the hull, but I think I'm going leave the 1' extension off the drive I'm reconditioning. Since the other drive is allready refurbished, I'd have to dismantle that guy then find a 1" extension for it, and that seems kinda tough. Not too confident on this though.
