difficult starting and sneezing at idle

Hello all,<br /><br />Glad to report i have a semi healthy 1980 Johnson v4 - the drilling of the small holes in the white pressure relief parts of the thermostats worked a treat. No more getting warm.<br /><br />Anyway, the boat now has a new issue. she is very hard to start when warm - plenty use of the choke, when started she sneezes pretty often at idle and when i try to accelerate she dies. <br /><br />Once going she pulls like a train.<br /><br />Any ideas??<br /><br />Stephen.

Those symtoms usually indicate a fuel supply problem.Could be just dirty carbs.If a little choke helps it indicates a fuel starvation.<br />I would check the fuel system from tank to carb (s)Clean and replace parts as required.Dont forget the diptube and the vent.

Your description of the problem indicates that the carburetors are fouled. Remove, clean, and rebuilt them.

Sorry guys, should have mentioned i put new carb kits in the carbs. Cleaned them up pretty well.<br /><br />Now i might have missed something, but before i tear them apart again, could it be something else? Could a simple link and sync set up be the answer?<br /><br />Stephen

Stephen - It sure won't hurt to check but bet you get back into the carbs.

I put in the carb kits, didn't have compressed air to blow out the jets, so i used a can of spray carb cleaner instead. i didn't soak the carb bodies in cleaner but they were pretty clean inside already.<br /><br />As i said, i might have missed something, but i think i did an OK job. From the sounds of it though, i will have to strip again and make sure everything is spotless.<br /><br />Stephen

Soaking in carb cleaner is bad for some carbs as it removes a body coating and makes the body porous. If you're tempted to do it, check with somebody who knows more than me in general about the coatings and about your carb in particular before doing it.

Tinkerer....soaking in carb cleaner is not recommender for I/O carbs although its done. I don't have a problem with soaking a O/B carb in carb cleaner. Follow up with carb cleaner in a can into all passages and blow out with compressed air. And I always punch out the core plugs just to make sure I got things open....not the lead beads but the larger round plugs.

OK, i cleaned the carbs out again today. I really made an effort to get everything spotless. <br /><br />Now a quick question about link & Sync. Now that i have my carbs back on, i checked the idle timing which was 4 degrees BTDC. However when checking WOT timing, i noticed that the timing gets advanced to full (28 degrees BTDC) when the carbs are only about 1/3 open. Is this right?<br /><br />Stephen
