digital camera lenses

I need help. I am looking at adding a lens to my digital camera, it is a cannon 20-D. I have been looking at Nikkor, Tameron, and Sigma. Seems like they all have the lens I might want, a 28-200.<br /><br />Does anyone have experiance with any of these lenses? I need to decide which one to go with.<br /><br />Thanks for your help<br /><br />Spud

I have 3 lens for my cannon std,telo and a fisheye the telo and fisheye are brand X and they meet my needs<br /><br />A lot of people are much more fussy about the minor quality differencs betwwen a 200 and 1000 dollar lens ?<br /><br /><br />tommays

agreed, but I can't find what I want, these are the lenses I've found, they range from about $360.00 to whatever the Nikkor will be.<br />Spud

I've been told that there are only a couple of companies that make all the lens for cameras. The only difference is the coating they put on the lens. Don't know if that is true or not though.

I have a couple Tamron lenses for my slr's. Had them for 15+ years. no problems.

Hi Spud,<br /><br />depending on how keen you are on photography, and your cash position, you may wish to consider the 70 to 200 Canon L Series lens which comes highly rated as a crisp, colour accurate and fast (low apertures) lens. You have a fine camera don't downgrade on the lens if at all possible.<br /><br />See review Canon 70~200mm <br /><br />I have wanted the Sigma 50 to 500mm for some time now and plan to get it for wildlife. Cannot afford the Canon L series lenses.<br /><br />You don't mention what type of photography you do as this has a large impact on the lens used. Tell me what you want to do and i'll comment.<br /><br />Also dont forget that there is the 1.6X factor with our digital camera's the 10D and 20D. This means you need to multiply your lens focul length by 1.6 or in other words a 70 to 200 becomes a 112 to 320 in reality as compared to a 35mm Film SLR. This factor is due to the sensor size being smaller that the 35mm film plane. On my Canon XL1 the magnification factor is 7.1X as this is even smaller being Mini DV.<br /><br />Cheers<br />Andrew

Thanks Andrew,<br />I've been quite busy and haven't been able to respond to you.<br />I will look at the Cannon series lenses, I think I need to stay close to pro quality with this camera, with a quality lens, the camera should be able to perform better than my abilities.<br /><br />I have only been shooting digital for a couple years, my other digital is a Nikon D70 I think. I went with the Cannon because of the speed and flexability of lenses.<br /><br />I shoot 90% action outdoors stuff, boating, hiking ect. Like to shoot a lot while I travel.<br /><br />I have a sigma on my Cannon Rebel 2000, I have liked it OK.<br />I am aware of the focal length difference between digital and film.<br /><br />Like I said, I will look at the Cannon lenses first.<br /><br />Spud

Neither Tamron nor Sigma are considered “pro” quality. They are consumer lens, and quite popular consumer lens at that. The big diff has to do with the materials and methods of construction (plastic retainers and inner barrels), a lower quality of glass, fewer lens groups, and the lens coatings.<br /><br />Dave – it’s not true, there are several companies that make lens. There are only a couple major companies that make the raw glass.

Hi Spud,<br /><br />I have used the older version of this lens for some time now. The old version only had the one mode of IS. The nice thing about IS is that as the focal length of the lenses is effectively increased by the 1.6X so too does the limitation on hand holding speeds alter. I have found that I often forget to compensate and that the IS automatically does it for me.<br /><br /> The lens with IS <br /><br />Cheers<br />Andrew

Yes Rubber, ya'd think that I should be looking at some other forums, but going somewhere else is like going to a different church. I have read this site for about a year now and have become accustomed to everyones personalty.<br />My free computer time is very limited, and this site is comfortable.<br /><br />When I mention pro quality, I didn't mean that I was even close to being a pro, I also realize that the spectrum is endless when it comes to spending $$ on anything these days, This camera was a little over 1K, and there are models avaliable for many times more than 1,000 bucks, I've seen them.<br /><br />Spud

I hear ya spud. I shoot an oly e500 myself. <br />There's pretty good info in that other forum but it definately doesn't have the personality or the camaraderie that this forum has!

And if it doesn't have something, well, there's always someone willing to make it up.<br /> <br /><br />Seriously, I think the experience and realistic opinions of the members here make for a excellent resource that covers almost anything or points you in the right direction for the info you need ... like RF referring you to another resource. It's ok, you won't be excommunicated. But you are required to share your knowledge and experience back here<br />
