Ok, why would this fry a camera? I bough new batteries, Rechargable and a charger. Yes they are the right ones for my camera. Ive been using rechargable all along, just needed more batteries. I put them on the charger that came with the batteries and charged them overnight. When I put them in my camera today, it tried to come on, and then went off. It wont power up at all now with different batteries. I checked the batteries with a volt meter and found one dead. It has four AAs. My question is, Would having one battery dead cause some electrical problem with the camera? Some weird power surge or something?

Boy am I pi$$ed!!!

Re: Digital camera "TOASTED"

I've just change from alk. to rechargable for my camera. The guy at the store explained, at great length, the correct battery for my camera (AA).

Something to do with milliamp discharge blah, blah, blah. I didn't understand or care but apparently their are different types. Before now, if I used cheap alkalines my camera wouldn't turn on. Dunno.

Aldo

Re: Digital camera "TOASTED"

Mine uses 4 AA also and will not work with one very low or dead battery.

I tried these two things
A: 3 fully charged and 1 very low (9/10ths a volt)
It would try to come on then go back off

B: 3 Fully charged and 1 dead (0 volts)
Wouldnt even try to come on

Try with 4 good ones and post again

PS it took me 30 batteries to find one low and one dead! :)

Re: Digital camera "TOASTED"

Four properly charged NiMH or NiCd's properly inserted should be fine, as would four decent alkaline batteries. If the camera does have a problem it is highly unlikely to be an injury caused by the batteries unless the majority were inserted the wrong way (or were charged the wrong direction) but most good electronic designs protect against this by adding a 5 cent diode to the power circuit. Are you sure the camera is damaged?

Battery trivia (occasionally quite important): NiCd cannot hold as much electricity as a NiMH (NiMH does have better run time, is more environmentally friendly, and gives more bang for your buck), but some say the NiCd can deliver its electricity more rapidly, making them favored by some for high discharge rate devices like remote control cars and rechargeable power tools. Neither NiMH nor NiCd can deliver the total amount of electricity (power)as a good alkaline. Alkalines run 1.5 volts per cell. NiCd's and NiMH run about 1.2 volts per cell. Most devices won't care about this lower operating voltage per se. The common exception is cheaper 9 Volt rechargables never will give you anywhere near 9 volts (7.2V?)- they don't have enough cells inside. Varta does make a good 9V rechargable, others may, not sure who. Some devices refuse to work unless the voltage is closer to 9- at least 8.4V. All rechargable batteries should be kept in sets of same brand, capacity, and age. Rechargables should never be stored in a low state of charge. Charge immediately after use! Rechargeables charged on smart chargers like to be left on the charger, but few chargers are smart chargers. A lot of batteries die from chronic over charging from plain, ordinary (dumb) chargers. Never insert one backwards from how it is supposed to be. Nicd's work great in freezing temperatures unlike most other batteries. (I'm not sure about how extreme cold affects NiMH) Draining rechargables down to totally dead can cause them to do strange and undesirable things. Almost but not quite dead for NiCd's from time to time has been said to be a healthy thing because of their alleged "memory effect", though this wisdom is not without controversy. If it was true it is probably much less so these days.

Like I said above, It wont power up at all now. No matter what batteries I try and use. It is deffinatly damaged. It sure seems to be a coincidence that it happened when I changed the batteries.

it's normal for electronic gear to fail when you power-up...more so than any other time. That's why alot of adept computor folks say to leave your computer on...

Hi, I had a similar problem with a Kodak digital, locked up and wouldn't turn on, try this, remove the batteries for 5-10 minutes and try again, worked for me and the advice came from the Kodak website FAQ, good luck.

Nope, Its dead. I paid over $300.00 for it early last year, I can get another one like it reconditioned off Ebay for about $125.00. I have about $250.00 worth of filters, lenses, etc. that will only fit this camera, 3.3 MP Toshiba PDR-M65, so that is probably the way I will go. I may send this one off after I get the replacement and see if it is worth fixing. Such is life in the digital lane.

Lubedude - I had same problem on a Olympus. Camera appeared to have a rubber reset button under storage card lid. I pressed it and camera was working again. It will disable the smalle capacitor current and allow camera to get out of the protection mode. Button was so small you could only press it with a pencil. I found the info on a webside.

Re: Digital camera "TOASTED"

Does that Toshiba have a reset maneuver to try? Many other cameras and other small digital devices do. If not just leve it totally unpowered for a couple days, even with the switch on occasionally to drain the capacitors, then retry it.

Re: Digital camera "TOASTED"

My digital camera would do the same thing Lubedude. I let a guy borrow it and he ran the batteries down in it and gave it back. it would turn on for a second, then shut back off. I bought a new pack of generic batteries and that didn't work. I had to go buy energizers for it to work. It takes alot of juice to keep those cameras going.

Re: Digital camera "TOASTED"

LubeDude,
Do you by chance have the external 5VDC power adaptor?? Might try powering up off the adaptor without the memory card.
If you get it to power up, do a check for the firmware revision in the camera now. They have version 6.0.10 online at their site. If you decide to do a firmware update, be sure to do it with the 5VDC power adaptor. Having the batts go flat during the flash WILL mean a trip back to a service center. BTW, you can call them toll free too, Tech Support 1-800-829-8318

Re: Digital camera "TOASTED"

Well, Im back in th digital scene again. Picked up a reconditioned one off Ebay for around $125.00 shipped, I think I will purchase the extended warrentee on this one, (never bought one before), This is my third camera like this, first one $350, Second one $200. this one $125. So now I have $675.00 invested in this camera. Different problems with each. I have all the accesories like I stated before, so I keep going back and I really like the camera and it takes great pictures. Hard to beat a 3.2 MP Camera, 3X optical and 2X digital for $125.00. They were over $700.00 when they came out. If something goes wrong with this one, I will probably go with something different.
