Re: Digital Camera

LubeDude, are you calling SBN "average"?

Hmmm, I'm not sure if he would take that as a compliment, or an insult. :D :D

Re: Digital Camera

After reading my post I can see your point!!

There is "no way" to put SBN into the AVERAGE catagory! Lets see if I can reword that previouse statement!

I beleive that the camera that mellowYellow has brought to light would be a very good choice for the type of photography you would be doing!

SBN: Sorry if I have insulted you, No disrespect intended!!

Thanks ROSCO for bringing this to my attention!

The Humbled LubeDude

Re: Digital Camera

Well, I would take it as a complement if someone would call me average.
Weird, bizarre, and eccentric, is what I usually hear.  :p

Re: Digital Camera

Spinner bait,
I just bought a Toshiba PDR3320 3.2 mega pixel on ebay last week. I had read a review on digital cameras from Consumer Reports about a year ago and the Toshiba PDR 25 was rated a best buy. The problem with Consumer Reports is that by the time the evaluation comes out on electronic devices, they're already discontinued. I just when with a later model and, so far I'm happy with it. I paid only $150 for a factory refurbished (and warranted) camera. It came with 32 meg of memory, enough for about 50 or so pictures before I have to download them. Here's a link to another 3320 on ebay, if your interested.
Toshiba PDR 3320
-Joe

Hey Snailman,
You said
===============================================
Watch out for names like Samsung or others that you might associate with great computers but not cameras. Their electronics might be find but if you don't normally associate the name with quality camera optics you might want to stay away.
================================================

Most name brand electronic manufacturers like Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony etc. (several more) use optics manufactured by high end manufacturers. Panasonic, for example, uses Leica lenses. Leica is a very high quality lens manufacturer.

-Joe

Re: Digital Camera

Good point Joe. My Sony had Carl Zeiss lenses, and while I will freely admit that I am not sure what significance that is, anything related to Zeiss seems to be respected. I do get excellent pics for a three year old camera. I have no need to run out and buy a new one as my current one takes perfectly fine pictures. I did a search for reviews for my camera on Epinions and it had a 98 percent 5 star rating. What more do I need?

Another thing to remember is that you still can take a chance with names that are associated with film cameras, as they may have been around for a long time making great cameras, they are still just as new to digital as anyone else. You can also bet that if you cracked a Cannon or a Nikon digital open, you'll probably see Sony or whoever else stamped on those electronics.

Re: Digital Camera

Joe... Jason...

You've both got good points. But you really do have to be careful.

Nowadays it's getting harder and harder to know who actually manufactures anything.

You can go into Radio Shack and buy a car stereo with their name on it that's actually manufactured by Pioneer or JVC. But it's probably not going to be up to the standards of a JVC unit.

The point is that if Leica or Nikon makes a substandard lense they're not going to put it in one of their cameras.... it'll go into a Samsung.

Just a thought. Maybe not worth the 2¢ you paid.

Re: Digital Camera

Thanks guys for all the input.
I now have some ammo to look at when I buy one.

And don't worry, calling me average in no way insults me.

Takes a lot more than that to get to this fat man.

Again, thanks.

Re: Digital Camera

SBN,

I use a relativity high end Olympus (for business) and am very satisfied with the quality of the camera and the photographs.
I recently saw that Olympus has released a “Water Resistant” camera; I think it is in the range of 3-4 mega pixels. May be nice to have a camera on the boat that could take a little water/rain without any worry. ;)

Good luck trying to decide. :D

Mike

Re: Digital Camera

I have the HP 850 4 meg camera for about a year now. Great 8x optical zoom. Runs on AA size batteries (I bought recharables). Have been very satisfied, and at the time, it was the only camera under $500 with all the right features. Also, the white balance is superb and color is true. It has been replaced by the 945 series, so I suggest that you read some reviews on the newer model. It is still under $500. I fit about 250 to 300 pictures on a 256 chip. Be sure that whatever camera you buy takes the Secure Digital chip for storing the photos. This is becoming the standard. It's a postage stamp size chip that you can plug directly into various other devices, like printers, and print your photos.

I am very satisfied with the HP 850, I am sure the 945 is every bit as good. Infact, it looks just like the 850, but in black rather than silver.

Re: Digital Camera

I've used several digitals but don't own one. I'm stuck on SLRs until I find a digital that doesn't hesitate between pushing the button and taking the picture. I like the "clunk clunk" in my Pentax :) Any digitals out there take quicker pictures? Or pictures in rapid succession?

PS of the digitals I've used I liked the Olympus weather resistant the best, but my experience is limited.

Re: Digital Camera

Most people I know who bought cheap entry level digital cameras quickly found out they wanted better quality, and more features.
My advice would be to spend a bit more money the first time rather than end up owning two cameras with one worthless in the drawer.
I buy Canadian, or American whenever I can, with one exception: Cameras. -Japan-. I won't buy one made anyplace else. I bought a Canon Powershot S30 (which is now redundant, and upgraded to a S40 or even S50 by now I think). I couldn't be happier with it.
The Lithion Ion batteries last forever between recharges, and the compact flashcards are simple to use and have come way down in price since I bought mine...
Good Luck.

Re: Digital Camera

If I missed someone saying this, it is worth repeating.

I did try to read every word in all the posts.

SBN the biggest draw back to my camera is that it only has a view screen to look at while taking a picture.Useless with the sun at your back.

I wound up glueing on a plastic tube to look through when taking pictures. But it's a very old camera and this may be a mute point these days.
