Hi there.
I noticed the distance between my dipstick tube and the bottom of the oil pan was 9/16".
That seems excessive to me. Does anyone know how close it should be to the bottom of the pan?
thanks

Why? The distance between the end of the dipstick tube and pan bottom isn't important. If you only have 9/16" of oil in the pan, there are more serious issues to work on.

As long as the full mark matches when the proper amount of oil is in the pan, the overall length of the stick or tube means nothing.

It does for changing the oil I would think. I'm guessing it leaves at least 1/2 a quart in there now when I use the tube to vacuum it out.
I should have been clearer. My concern wasn't the oil level or how it matches the full mark.

What type of oil sucker are you using? The hose down the dipstick tube or the threaded adapter on the tube?

Then you will have the problem of not getting all the oil out. The tube never rests on the bottom of the pan.

If your pump came with the hose to stick down the tube and it fits through the threaded top of the tube, use that because it will reach the bottom of the pan.

Millions of boats made with same dipstick. If its not a problem for all those boats, why would a bit of old oil left in the sump be an issue for you? Just wondering

I was asking because I don't know if the dipstick tube has been messed with.
It's a 35 year old motor that's been rebuilt at least once. Who know what else has been done.
I can easily get the tube to go deeper. Just wondering if there was a known distance it should be at.

I have a small enough hose to go down the tube. Just takes longer.

Warm up the motor. use the threaded adapter first and then use the small hose to suck up the dregs.

Change oil ever 40 hours of use and don't worry about the little bit left.
