I heve a 65 chris craft 17 ft corsair that has some trash in the gas tank that resulted from a poor fitting gas cap. The problem I have is I cant get dthe tank out of the boat, its in the bow and I can get the two lag bolts that hold the rear of the tank but is preventing me from getting the tank out. It feels like another bolt or something is holding it in, it will move around but will not come out. There is no room to reach around to work or to feel for other bolts. The tank, I think, really needs to come out to properly clean it. Any suggestions?

Why MUST it be removed to be cleaned? Have you drained the gas out? Removed the filler hoses?------------Can you see with a light under the tank if the bolt heads are bottom side up?

Re: dirty gas tank

I have a small electric fuel pump mounted on a board with an inline filter (to keep the chunks out of the pump) with a hose and a copper tube to go down in the tank and pick up all the dirt and water out of the bottom. Since water (and dirt, rust, corrosion etc.) is heavier than gas it always settles to the bottom. You can pull the engines pickup tube out of the tank and tip the boat up to make it the lowest spot in the boat and use the pump. Then install a water seperating fuel filter between the tank and the engine fuel pump and replace it at least yearly.<br />No reason in the world to pull the tank to clean it. The reason you don't find a drain plug is because it's illeagle to have a drain plug in a "GAS" tank. All fittings must be on the top of the tank.

AND....just in case you were thinking about it....DO NOT use a vaccum to remove the contents of this gas tank! the fumes alone are enough to kill you, (along w/a static spark). merry Christmas...sl
