I have an old Evinrude 18 horse - not sure of the year yet but I think late 1950's. Leaves white oily droplets coming up to the surface of the water by the dock. Any suggestions as to where I can start? I am picking up a manual later this week.
Thanks.

Re: Dirty old thing

Rarely are the milky droplets actually coming from within the lower unit, rather they are usually unburnt fuel/oil coming from the exhaust. This is the result of incomplete combustion, which in itself can be the result of low compression, poor spark, too rich of a carb setting, etc. Best thing to do is to make sure the motor has good compression (preferably on the far side of 100psi and no more than 5% variance between cylinders), make sure the ignition is good and you've got the correct plugs in place (Champion J6Cs) and that the carb mixture knobs are at the leanest position at which the motor will run smoothly, minus 1/8 turn. Joe Reeves has several posts on this board regarding setting the carb mixture needles...

- Scott
