Re: Disappearing threads.

By Pat:
The homo issue for example is of a nature IMO that most kinda talk about in whispers or hushed conversation.
Only on a board where animosity is assured will folks be as vocal as is displayed here.
I dont think so.
You can ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you I am intolerant. I call them as I see them. If I offend someone with my views then chances are they offend me with theirs. ;)

BY M.Y. :
I have finally learned to stay away from "obvious"
trolls here after a year and a half.
Really??

Re: Disappearing threads.

The only problem I have with locked or poofs is when a mod. enters into a debate. Kinda like the quarterback on a football team being able to throw a flag or just taking the ball and going home. :( A slight conflict of interest their. But the positives outway the negative, and overall, it's a pretty good balancing act. :)

Re: Disappearing threads.

Intersting point, Bigfun.

On the other hand, I am the only one of the 4 moderators who uses my member ID when moderating. Otherwise, you don't know if it is a mod participating or not. I guess that makes me a lightning rod when there is discontent. So be it. It is my choice.

All mods participate in at least some threads. We have all been members a lot longer than we have been moderators. We don't always agree on controversial topics, but we all have the same rules to enforce without regard to our agreement or disagreement with what is posted.

Our debates are not win-lose contests, but simply sharing of points of view. Throwing of the flag, as you put it, has nothing to do with the opinions expressed. It has to do with iboats' rules of discourse.

Re: Disappearing threads.

I can second JB's sentiment. As a moderator I do not delete or modify a thread or topic based upon my opinion of the topic. Any actions taken are done so because of the rules as it pertains to flaming, inappropriate subject matter and the overall civility of a thread. We all know what the rules are.

If I delete or modify a thread I will leave an explanation without pointing fingers at any particular members.

it is better to remain silent and appear a "fool"
than to open your mouth and remove all doubt...

MY,

Your not doing a very good job from staying away from a troll.

Perhaps you should try a little harder. :p

I really don’t have anything to add.

I just wanted another point on my way to 'dock boy' status. :)

Re: Disappearing threads.

Mods,
Just a question. Would it be possible to just delete the posts that are a problem instead of deleting the entire thread? Maybe when the particular post is deleted it is followed with a warning from one of the Mods. Sometimes I see a complete thread deleted that had some well thought out replies.

I'm guessin its probably too much trouble.

(Edit: Yes, it is possible, but is often difficult without unbalancing the discussion or breaking the linearity.)

I always know if its a good thread if Mellowyellow is in. I was looking at this and didn't see him and thought something was wrong. Then there he is.

Re: Disappearing threads.

Carphunter – what you are talking about is a well-moderated forum. That can be found where forums exist for the purpose of forum-ing. Here, the forums are a marketing vehicle to support retail sales beyond iBoats.com, and I am guessing, manipulating web-site hits (and sticky stats?) to be used to further market other retail business/on-line sales tools in a business-to-business environment. What we see as iBoats boating forums actually exists in the shadow of a vast e-business effort by its founder/owner. The actual business model is inconsequential.

As I mentioned above, there can be liabilities in providing access to a public forum. The vehicle, iBoats’ forums, can become a source of serious revenue loss if not managed. It is likely in the best fiscal interest of the ‘parent’ to poof a thread than risk that exposure.

Re: Disappearing threads.

I'm with you Brian it does not get interesting until MellowYellow steps up to the plate. This years get together will be very lively if all these different personality's show up. You can't miss me. I will be the one with the barb wire and claymores around my room.

Ever notice that these type of threads seem to disappear when we all get back to fishn. I agree with CrabBait, break a leg MellowYellow. My bad you already did. Still want no excuses when we hook up in May on why you can't catch the gator..

Very good point there carpy.
There has been some interesting threads that had some good info in them that have went poof with all the good info.
That's ok, I copy and save all the good ones into my documents before they go to poof city for future reference.

Anyone want to relive the basement deal back when dockside chat was getting started. :D
If my memory serves me right without going and looking, there was a mod ;) involved in that discussion pretty heavy.
